I got some more details about how this works the other day. As long as I complete my Capstone paper on time, I will not have to pay enrollment maintenance fees if I haven’t passed my language requirement by the end of my degree. I have 5 years total to complete all degree requirements – so until Aug. 2013.
So at least I can now prioritize. Priority #1 is to complete my Capstone by the end of 27 months (one year from now) in order to avoid paying enrollment maintenance fees.
Priority #2 is to complete the language requirement. I will try to pass the oral exam when I’m on campus for the Capstone Seminars, but if I can’t do it, I will commit some time to intensive language study following my Capstone. And then once I’ve passed this requirement, I should have an MA!

OK, so I have to pass this oral proficiency exam for my MA. 1 year ago, I had the goal to brush up both French and Japanese to a high intermediate level. Well, I should have taken the tests last year because I was close to the level then and I have gotten WORSE, not better over the last year. Actually, that’s not necessarily true. My Japanese has gotten way worse, my French has perhaps gotten slightly better though I don’t know why. Maybe all the French films I’ve been watching, maybe just cuz my Japanese is worse and not interfering.
I’m going to work on my French as much as I can in the next couple of weeks and take a French test in June. I am praying for a miracle that will allow me to score Advanced, but I doubt it. If I can at least get Intermediate high, then I just need to work on my Japanese. If I don’t do this, I can’t get my degree. I’m a bit discouraged. :(
