I have this thought out, it’s just going to take some time and money. Ultimately, I would like to have our full CD library available on the media server with the ability to play the music through our home stereo.
Here are the steps that I’ve thought of:
- Purchase a new PC. Our current PC, which is pretty old, will become the server.
- Buy and install a couple of 250+Mb hard drives for the old computer. Lots of space!
- Get a media hub device. This might be a Tivo, or a dedicated media hub device. Anyone have experience or advice?
- Connect it all up. Thankfully we already have ethernet in the house, so this should be easy.
- Burn all of our CDs to the server. Probably going to use Musicmatch’s mp3PRO format; it gives CD quality sound but is about 40% smaller than the normal format
- Tag and update all of the mp3s…want to make sure all tracks have album art, lyrics, ratings, etc.
That’s it! :)
