What the… ?

You know, Unc may be the sort of guy who rubs some people the wrong way, but he’s honest and even from my brief interactions with him, I know he’s good people. However, I could easily see how he’d get booted and it kinda hurts. I am one of those brownshirts you’re all worried about. I go to the Neighborhood Watch at least once a day ‘cause I’m addicted to the extra cheers and I like looking after our community. Every so often there’s someone who comes across the Neighborhood Watch who has “self harm goals!!!!111” but who really is just someone with a darker sense of humor than most of us. Everyone who writes a post with an image or a link comes across the Neighborhood Watch at some point. I love kicking out spammers and scammers, but I do get worried about the cases where three people have marked some poor guy as “SPAM!” while I think it’s legitimate to give someone a link to your alma matter when you’re posting about finishing college, not to mention the people whose fates are decided before I even get a chance to vote on them.

I like being able to look after our own community. The Robots clearly don’t have time and I’d rather see the Neighborhood Watch than 80,000 people who are only here looking for a free copy of The Sims 2 online or a chance to advertise their dental practice in Dallas [true story]. That said, it doesn’t do a very good job. In addition to the people looking for The Sims 2 online [and there are so many of them that they’d be goal #3 or 4 were that goal included on the main list], there are also a lot of self-harm goals that haven’t quite been squashed. The pro-ana people are still looking to put their community back together. I actually wrote The Robots a real, live actual letter a few weeks ago because I was really annoyed and concerned about the runaway goals. Teenagers were posting their emails, phone numbers and zipcodes and it was just not cool. I decided that the whole thing was beyond my abilities, wrote them a letter and backed off.

Ugh.

Anyway, that’s my Neighborhood Watch rant. Bring back Unc! 4 years ago

Unc… I don’t comment or cheer on your goals/comments as much I should, but you’ve been a very interesting person to follow… and from the way everyone else has talked on here, you’re a good guy to have in your corner… and you seem to be in a lot of people’s corners from time to time. I can’t imagine 43T without Unc. He keeps the community sane with his fearless views and great sense of humour. Deleting his account would be selfish considering how many people would miss him. 4 years ago

I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I thought something terrible had happened to Unc’. I’m glad he’s alright, but the fact he is thinking about leaving is just wrong. Anyone with a fraction of a brain in his head would know he would never ever hurt his daughter, let alone shoot her. That’s just Unc’s way of talking. That’s not what you would usually do! Your way to solve problems is to argue, make people think, make them realize their mistakes and if it still doesn’t work, tell them to fuck theirselves. Just leaving wouldn’t be YOU! It would just mean you’re accepting the loss!

This will be a very boring place if they kick Uncle out.

I don’t know what is going on, but Uncle you are as much part of 43 as four and three, and we will miss you.
No matter how long I take coming back, every time I check my subscriptions, if not most at least some entries are yours, and it is reassuring to see them, because it is that familiar feeling that keeps making me come back.

While this is not exactly what Unc is doing, it’s close enough. His goal says “Shoot my kid in the head,” but every entry reveals his affection for his daughter Jeny.

If someone’s goal is to shoot someone and they actually write about shooting someone, then by all means, get it off the site. But when every word contradicts the stated goal, as in Unc’s case, I think most of us are smart enough to understand that he doesn’t really mean it.

It is not as though most of us have never expressed ourselves in such a way. I routinely threaten to turn my cat into a sofa pillow if she treats the couch like a scratching post one more time. And if all of us carried out every idle threat we made to kill a friend or loved one, there would be few of us left, and those that remained would be in jail.

So, Robots, what do you say? Let’s observe the spirit of the rules rather than the letter. 4 years ago

My heart stopped beating for a second when I saw this goal – it’s almost too horrible to imagine 43T without Unc. Just when you think you’re starting to figure him out, you’ll see another facet to him. Don’t leave us, Unc!4 years ago

If Unc does leave, then we’ll find out if I’ve cheered him more than 900 times or not. If I have, then I’ll have to reissue the 100,000th cheer. I really don’t want to do that, so if Unc does jump ship I hope he’ll do it like Des and Dwlt have done and not like Joshito, Holly, DJ, Singingfool, and so many others. There’s too many gaps in conversations as is.

but I and other reasonable, love-of-language sorts don’t for a second want to see Uncle Enore leave 43 Things, even if we understand his point and recognise its validity.
It’s just not worth it.
It’s not worth it to lose him. We know the point of integrity, and of standing up against arbitrary rules, false conformity, hypocrisy, and political correctness gone wild.
But deletion is not worth it. It’s not rebellion.
We all know what Uncle Enore stands for. His presence stands for more. His presence here is defiance. Deletion is character suicide.

Unc, it goes without saying that the decision to stay or go is yours and yours alone. We can’t blackmail you into staying. Well, perhaps Serenity could, but that’s between you, her, and the goat. But know this – you would be missed, by a lot of people. This goal is barely two hours old and already over a dozen 43Ters are in your corner, fighting for you. That shows the level of support you have. Mr Creed’s write city hall and complain about them removing unc’s goal ’’shoot my kid in the head’‘ is gathering pace too.

In short, if you go you’ll leave a huge hole in the world of 43T and you know I speak with great affection when I say that nobody else around here is a big enough prick to fill it.

On a more personal note, if you’re not a fully-fledged 43Ter when I get to California I can’t visit you and share Pringles and beer in a parking lot. Think about what you’d be giving up. 4 years ago

IS IT EVERY WEEKEND WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH SOMETHING WITH YOU ALL!!!! As much as we ALL love 43things…just so you know it’s the PEOPLE that make this site worth while…so kind of get your act together!

Now Unc, I have to shamelessly say that just a couple of weeks ago I stayed up till 3am reading those posts under your goal. I’ve never read so much in one night on here. But your love for your daughter is something that I’ve ALWAYS admired/envied. And I totally understand that she’s your heart and having all those posts deleted probably feels like a part of you is missing…

But I URGUE you please reconsider…not to survive without that part being found, but to fight for that missing part to be replaced by the Bots. 43things is a community and we’re here for you Unc…and we all will fight for you and with you on this! It’s an injustice and we won’t let it rest!
