How to go to my high school reunion"It was like traveling through a time warp...unreal and wonderful."
How I did it: Started getting back in touch with former classmates about a year before the reunion. Used my saved up frequent flyer miles to fly to Indianapolis, then rented a car and drove to South Bend, Indiana. Lessons & tips: Remember that everyone else is just as nervous as you are about getting back together after 40 years apart. Once the ice is broken, the memories come flooding back. You may find yourself marveling at how similar your pathes have been or reveling in the differences. It is absolutely NOT anything to be afraid of doing. So go for it! Resources:

How I did it: Planned my vacation trip home to include the weekend of the reunion. Contacted some of my old classmates on Facebook. It being my 30th, it made me reflect on my life quite a bit. Almost everyone else has children, and some have grandchildren. I wish I'd been able to have more in depth conversations with some people...really know what gets them excited about their lives. There was a lot of talk about our jobs. Read how I did it…

How I did it: Decided that the 25th (which was really the 26th) might be the last time I'd be motivated to make the trip. I spoke to a couple of people, and had a friend to room with. That was a good idea.Kept a positive attitude, tried to observe and listen. Wasn't really concerned about whatever might be thought about me, but very curious about how others' lives developed. I just checked in for my flight online and printed out my boarding pass. Looks like I’m just about set for this mini-adventure.
I’ve already paid for my hotel and the reunion dinner. I’ve confirmed my car rental. I’ve printed out maps to the place we are meeting for drinks on Friday evening and the church where the dinner will be on Saturday. I went to a party store and bought the beads I wanted to bring along.
The best part so far is that I contacted the local all-schools alumni association and they were able to locate a copy of the HS yearbook for my senior year, so I am going to pick it up on Friday morning. The cost: $30. The value: priceless.
All that’s left to do now is pack, get out to the airport by 7am, and fly. I won’t be online for four days—that’s what I call a vacation. (Although I hate to think what my e-mail in-box is going to look like when I get back!)
I wasn’t sure I could swing it when I adopted this goal, but now it’s 90% probable I’ll accomplish it. I turned in my frequent flyer miles for a round-trip ticket to Indianapolis, and I’ve booked a motel for two nights near the Notre Dame campus in South Bend. Now all I need to do is send in my check for the dinner on July 11th and book a rental car. I also need to get some Las Vegas-style Mardi Gras beads to pass out to classmates at the dinner—orange and blue, our high school colors, of course. This should be fun!

This should help with the confidence levels! I’m getting it cut a week before I fly to Indiana, which should give me time to figure out how to do it myself. (Yeah, in the dry LA climate which is so unlike my humid homeland.)

I’ve paid for my place under the big top. The reunion’s going to be held at the home of one of my classmates. Sounds a lot nicer, frankly, than going to a restaurant.

Now I’m really excited. I’m going home for 12 days, on my own, so I can be completely self-indulgent and spend lots of time with friends and family.

I can hardly believe it’s been thirty years!
I’ve been in touch with one of the girls from this photo (my 8th birthday party) all along, and have reconnected with several more on Facebook recently. We’re going to the reunion together!
We went to a small rural high school. Just 93 in our graduating class. The reunion’s going to be at one of the guy’s houses, a tent and entertainment. Sounds nice and relaxed.
I learned that my graduating class is going to hold a reunion in June 2009. As a first step, I’m reconnecting with some of the organizers through Classmates.com. I’m not sure how I’m going to swing this, but it would be something very special to see old friends after all these years.
Had mixed emotions of why I would want to bother attending but SOOO glad I did. It was great to reconnect, hear what had been going on in their lives, and none of the caddy high school clickie stuff going on. People were more down to earth, and amazing how the popular cheerleader gerls had gotten so overweight and looking like mileage plus, except one.
Being that I’ve blossomed, went to college and look better than I did then, was a good boost.
I recommend attending and look forward to the next big one.
