Recently had a ticket application approved for two games in Johannesburg, South Africa. Was hoping to see the final but that might have to wait for a different World Cup. Can’t wait!
How to watch the world cup live
How I did it: I saw games at the 2006 world cup in Germany. I knew tickets would be sold in a lottery and at pretty high prices. Wanting to be a part of it anyway, I signed up as a volunteer. In my application, I mentioned that I would be interested in volunteering for the confederations cup 2005 already, and they gave me a position in accreditation. Since people need to get their accreditation (access card to the stadium for people working there, players etc.) before the match usually, we didn't have much work during games. All volunteers had accreditations to the general areas of the stadium which included the stands. So, I was able to watch every match in the city i worked in!
For the world cup, I ended up being assistant of the venue manager and had extremely little to do during the games, so I was able to see the matches there as well.
Working as a volunteer got me great work experience, seeing lots of matches (including Brazil-Argentina at the Confed Cup, and matches with England, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, France and Spain at the World cup) and an amazing behind the scenes look at the event. I could write a book about this.
Lessons & tips: I definitely recommend you to consider volunteering if you have the time and want to get a behind the scenes look at these awesome events. You will not be guaranteed to see any matches, but every volunteer I know saw at least one match.
Resources: Check the organizing committee's website (should be easy to find through google) for volunteer positions at least 1-2 years before the start of the event if you want to volunteer. Same goes for normal tickets - they will be gone fast and may be distributed through a lottery.

What a coincidence. I made a pact with my dad a few days ago, that someday, we’d watch a world cup final together!
