I don’t think I’ll ever work up past small livestock but there are a few things I’d like to accomplish on my hobby farm:
Beekeeping
Fruit and nut orchard
Vegetable garden
Berry patch
Chickens
Sheep or goats (+1 llama)
Small (very small) flower garden
All this might end up being a full-time job though, so I hope to marry well :) I want my kids to be active and involved and excited about being outside and not embarrassed of crazy Mom the Bee Lady (I promise not to wear the beekeeper’s suit when your friends are over…no promises on the goats). With all of this comes a lot of other skills to learn…canning and preserving, pest control etc. But I want to really take ownership of and work with my home and my community—I think this is one way to do that. I have a lot of interest in the idea of “permaculture” and sustainable agriculture (a’la Michael Pollan) but I don’t think I want to commit to larger livestock like cattle and pigs.
