I love to read, I know the benefits of reading, but for some reason I don’t do it as often as I’d like.

The few times I’ve decide to pick up the latest super hyped up teen fiction series, I’ve been glad I did. A few years back it was the Twilight books, this time Hunger Games. I pick up these books and they suck me in. I’ll read all day and then run out to pick up the next book in the series to continue to feed my crazy appetite for more.
This reading behavior is totally unusual for me. I often go months without reading a book and when I am reading something it’s likely that I read just a few pages at a time on bus rides and regularly put the book down before I’m finished (especially with nonfiction), but that crazy teen lit just sucks me in…
I think there are a few things that make these so hard to put down. Super accessible voices, fun, guilty pleasure plots, and some nostalgia connected to how it felt to be a teen girl (even though I never had vsmpires and werewolves fighting over me or had to fight in a deathmatch).
The funny thing about these books is that they remind me how easy reading is, how quickly you can get into the scene if you let yourself spend enough time in the pages. I want to be reading more often like this, where I carry my book from room to room to keep reading and ignore facebook and internet distractions in favor of finding out what happens next. I need to figure out what kind of books I really like and regularly have some time for fiction (and not just teen lit).
The other day I picked up Wicked and started a few pages on the bus, but haven’t plunged deep enough in yet to be hooked. Maybe I should carve out a good hour in the next day or to to get into the story and see what happens. 15 months ago
Funny to see I wrote about Omnivore’s dilemma 2 years ago, just picked it up again last month and am working my way through it again—was really into it for a few weeks, then put it down when “Eating Animals” arrived after a long wait at the library. That book was at times an upsetting read, so I put it down, but want to finish it before I turn it back in…
I think what derails me a bit is that I get several books from the library at one time all on different topics. Just got one on ADHD and another on the Paleo diet—I jump around depending on my mood.
This weekend we got away and I’ve found being away from our house I want to read a bit more. Need to do this whenever I want to mess around on the internet looking for something to watch… 19 months ago
