Last time I went to the dentist she told me I could give myself cancer with this habit. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to stop doing it, taking the advice of others and using sheer willpower to stop. Step one: make an appointment with a doctor, maybe a psychologist! This is DEFINITELY related to an anxiety problem. In the meantime, does anyone have a recommendation for a way to heal the rough skin?

finally found a good website 2 months ago

I have searched for answers and read alot of helpful entries, but I finally found a website that you may want to check out also. It’s called tonguechewing.com Even though its about tongue chewing the information is very helpful for other oral fixation habits. Hope you get some help from this site.

I have done this for at least 25 years….I am 49 now. My Dad used to do it too, though not as obsessively as I do. I used to bite the side of my tongue excessively too, but don’t do that as much, though I still do it.
Worst part about all of this, aside from the wrinkles and risk of oral cancer, is that I have ground my teeth down to where the bottom teeth are completely flat on top, and my top teeth are also worn down.
They are all very sensitive, and just ache sometimes. They look awful, but I have been told that vaneers or any other cosmetic work will be ruined because of the clenching and biting.
Very sad and depressing. I am sure I have underlying issues, but there has to be some kind of appliance we could all wear that would make it impossible to continue this habit!
We would all be rich if we could design it!

I have this! 3 months ago

I have been bitting my cheek for about 7 years and really the most problem I have with this is i have big brusies on my cheeks from pushing and it is so crazy because when i go out people ask if i am being beaten! It is so horrible because I have to go into this long thing about why the brusies are there and people look at me like I am crazy. I would do anything to stop. I started when my son was born with his Bilateral cleft lip and palate with all the surgreys i just sit there bite the hole time worring while he is having surgerys. Now i do it all the time. If any one can help please let me know what i can do to stop this. Thanks

I have done this as long as I can remember. In fact, when I was four, I was staying with some family friends, and for some reason, I fell asleep in the laundry room. When they found me, they were afraid I’d drunk some bleach or detergent and they took me to the hospital. I still remember being rushed through the ER and the doctor saying, “Oh, my God! She’s got blisters in her mouth! She did drink bleach!” I was admitted for a week.
I mainly do it when I’m in deep thought or concentrating on something. I really want to stop. I always have bruises around my mouth and I currently have multiple canker sores and I’m in serious pain.

I used to do this a lot when I was much younger. Now I am in my fifties, and after watching my sister-in-law do it constantly, I started back up again doing this about 3 months ago. I hate it. I find myself doing this, especially when I’m on the computer or watching tv. Along with the cancer scare, I am concerned about all the wrinkles I am causing from all the facial expressions while doing this. I am not sure when I stopped doing it during my younger years, but I do know that I had not missed it. It is a compulsive behavior that I am sure I could get rid of, but I’m not exactly sure how. Maybe when I start feeling myself do this, I could pop in some sugar-free candy or gum, so as not to add “insult to injury”, and keep my mouth occupied with those things instead of allowing myself to chew it. Since I am confronting my problem headon by relating it to other people with the same problem, I have not allowed myself to partake of this bad habit the whole time it took me to type this…sooooo….that’s progress, isn’t it? Sure hope so.
