How to remodel my kitchen

How I did it: For budget reasons, I tried to figure out what I could live with. Cabinets were very sturdy and a good layout, but dark and depressing, so I decided to paint them white. Floor was ok. So that meant everything else wasn't! I picked granite countertops and stainless steel appliances for resale value (and cause they look cool!) Lessons & tips: As a single woman, it was a bit daunting to take on this task but very rewarding! It's amazing how many details there are to sort through and research to do when buying for example a new sink and faucet or a refrigerator. Although it seemed like there was always something going wrong, I tried to not freak out and keep plodding ahead. Resources: Angie's List is GREAT for finding local service people. I found a fantastic plumber, electrician, handyman, and an ok painter (see posts!)

How I did it: I was messing around on the computer and somehow filled out some kind of survey about remodeling my kitchen and immediatley my phone rang and it was Sears. They came out to my house and showed me every thing on a laptop and said once everything was ordered it would take about a week. Read how I did it…

3. Get quotes for all building/electrics/plastering work
4. Save money to buy units + trade works electrics plastering/building
5. Buy units
6. Rip out all existing units.
7. Remove all tiles
8. Remove old plaster
9. Get chosen builder to make alterations to kitchen
10. Get chosen electrician to rewire kitchen
11. Get chosen Plasterer to re-plaster the new kitchen
12. Fit new units and appliances to plan.
Time frames for items above.
1 = 1-6 months
2 = 6-12 months
3 = 6-12 months
4 = 1-18 months
5 = 18-24 months
6 = 18-24 months
7 = 1-6 months
8 = 1-6 months
9-12 = 18-24 months

I’ve put this off forever .. life has a way of getting in the way. Well, I guess other things took priority.
This weekend hopefully a friend will come over to help me install my cabinet handles .. finally!
Now we just have trim, painting finishing, bottom toe-stop, microwave install, and lights on the outside and inside and we’re done.
But one thing at a time. :)

I HATE MY KITCHEN

My kitchen isn’t old….it’s only 3 1/2 years old so it’s very new, but I hate it..there isn’t enough room, hardly any storage, and the gray grout on the floor looks white well it did not anymore now it just looks dirty. I want to knock down a wall between the kitchen & living room & extend the south wall out a few feet (however many feet it takes). I also want granite countertops too! I am hoping while doing this I’ll be able to add a mudroom out of the space of my current kitchen – I’m so sick of coats & shoes in my kitchen. I’d like to add a bar/island too. I have an island now, but it isn’t very big at all. I know this is going to be very costly probably even more then I’m thinking, but I don’t care. I’m getting very impatient. I think that as much time as I spend in the kitchen I should have the kitchen of my dreams NOW!! I’m saving as much as I can and hopefully once I pay off my Jeep I will be able to afford a loan payment. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

The new wood floor is down! The bathroom has been tiled and is 1/2 grouted.
It’s acutally starting to look like something other then a mess.
