How to work at a Renaissance Festival
"Huzzah! 20 pounds off my mien!"
How I did it: Volunteered at the Shakopee, MN Ren Fest for a summer job in high school (I've heard if you want to be serious Kenosha, WI is one of the larger ones in the northern circuit).
I became a kitchen wench, slaving over a hot stove of Turkey legs (I didn't have a clue how to cook prior) and parrying with comments like "Ah see chicken comes on a stick; d'you come on a stick, lass?" from men 2x my age.
Not a great career, but definitely a great time!
Lessons & tips:
- Drink tons of water and don't be afraid to take breaks and cop food out of the kitchen to keep your energy level up (I lost 5 lbs/weekend of water)
- Wear comfy anachronistic shoes-- Minnetonka Moccasins + new age insoles = godsend
- Try to camp onsite if you can-- long commutes and long days are more tiresome than roughing it for a couple weekends
