The porch swing sways
Gently in the relative
Stillness of the sunny
Afternoon, the creaks of
The chain chirping softly
To nobody in particular.
Some dew still hangs
From the hinges; a
Leftover from the storm
That rolled though the
Night before. The rumble
Of thunder shook the
Porch boards and swift
Winds swirled the air
Bowed tree limbs to
The point just before
Snapping. The couple sat
On the swing watching
The lighted night and
Black clouds changing shape
As they moved across
The sky to catch the
Next set of explosions.
They rocked together with
No sounds but those
of the storm and
The creaking hinges which
Sung under the thunder
Lulling it to pass.

This seems appropriate today, as it was John’s birthday:
