I went to Indonesia with my little sister in January.
It wasn’t where I really wanted to go. Twice before I have gone to Thailand to be alone and complete a 7 day fast. I wanted to do that again as I had just finished up a very demanding project at work. But my manipulative little sister had other ideas. She booked her own trip to Indonesia, around the time that tension was flaring about the execution of the Bali bombers. Parental pressure, and concern for my sister kind of forced my hand.
And I’m ever so glad. We hadn’t travelled together for years, not since I was coming home from South Korea and she was on her way to Canada and we met in Asia in 2003. We spend a lot of time together anyway, but there’s something wonderful about holidaying alone together away from everything. I hope we carry on doing it for the rest of our lives, kids, husbands or not.
Indonesia itself was fun too. We spent most of our time on the Gili Islands off Lombok. I got burned to a crisp, got nappy rash, swallowed some sort of very fiery insect and had more bouts of ‘Bali Belly’ than I care to remember. But mostly, I was happy.
Because it was my little sister and me.
