I knew this week would be hard – exams at the new (and distant) campus all day Monday, grading those and 65 writing exams this week. I should have gone earlier, but my days have gotten switched around and the rain has been pouring down in torrents at the times I would usually go running. Finally went this morning and it felt both awesome and terrible – struggling with my breathing a bit since it’s been a few days and I have a false sense of how fast I ‘should’ be going. It went okay, just wondering if I’m going to lose out on this goal when I’m so close (this would be the final week). Gotta go twice tomorrow, or maybe run once and then go over to the pool and go swimming later in the day. don’t know. too much to do before flying out on Monday 2 years ago

youch – didn’t stretch out last night like I usually do after a run (my own version of part of a yoga asana reeeeeally slowly – feels reeeeeallly good) and I felt it today. So stiff and slow and painful. Had to push myself really hard, but I went and I finished! Training Schedule Week 4 complete, Week 3 of this goal complete. That feels good. Think I’m too tired though b/c even with the run I was grumpy. Catching up on my zzzzzzz’s tonight and ready to start my next running week on Monday or Tuesday (giving exams all day Monday, so it might be too much). 2 years ago

ack! just made it and with just time (tomorrow) to do my 3rd run of the week – not exactly ideal, squeezing them in at the end of the week 2 weeks in a row, and having 3 days between last week’s and this week’s runs. but I made it!! week 4 on my training schedule and I think I’m doing pretty good – don’t feel over my head, though I definitely have to push myself. week 3 for this goal, and I’ll finish it (LW) right before I fly out. Gotta keep it up during my trip too – that’s the next goal I think :) 2 years ago

didn’t think I’d make it today – not much sleep last night, a reeeeeeally long, reeeeeally frustrating day of classes (these were last classes – should have been fun! what happened?!), plus a reeeeeeallly long bus ride back from the new campus, which always drains my energy, but somehow I ended up in my running shoes and out on the road – forgot a few things, but I was out there. Successfully complete Week 4 Run #1 on the training schedule, 1st day of week 3 on this goal. One day, one moment at a time – aiya! 2 years ago

I just completed the 3rd wk of my training schedule with flying colors – picked up speed at the end of that last run and it felt awesome!
This is the 2nd wk of this goal successfully completed – just 2 more weeks to go, though this might be the hard part with exams and final grades! oh, and packing!
in the end a great run though :D

YAY! did my wk3#2 on the training schedule. for my goal I’m 2/3rds through the 2nd week, so almost 1/2-way. this feels really good. and it’ll end right on time, if I can keep this up through final exams and grading and packing to leave. should be interesting as I’ll be traveling and dealing with jet lag right after I finish this (GW), but I want to keep going with it and not lose the work I’ve put in so far and have to start over. I have another training schedule from a running book that I’m hoping to start right after, so I’ll bring a copy with me. One day at a time, just trying to prepare for potential difficulties. :)
bonus: the moon was stunningly beautiful tonight, a crescent just greater than a sliver with dark, high clouds drifting sparsely across and around it. I don’t think I would have seen it if I hadn’t gone running tonight – The spacious heavens declare the glory of God! (Ps 19) :) 2 years ago

this week I had 2 days where I felt I sank out of the world
for this goal that means that I’ve pushed my runs toward the end of the week – hoping I don’t kill myself this way, but for today’s run I took it easy anyway, so tomorrow I’m hoping I’ll do all right. gotta go stretch now. On the training schedule this is Wk 3 #1!!! For this goal this is week #2 (missed that week b/c I was sick) but doing good. :D 2 years ago

finished my 3rd run of the week with 9 minutes to spare before the beginning of the next week – yes, this was a bit foolish, but with this I have:
SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE 2ND WEEK OF THE TRAINING SCHEDULE!!!
we celebrate small successes here :)
actually it felt awesome too – not perfect but really good, including the last segment.
a short holiday this coming week with lots of schoolwork so, on both counts, I need to be pushing myself extra hard to use my time well, and to continue with this goal 2 years ago

yay for week 2 #2 in the training schedule
this one was approaching agony and it is stinking HOT right now – so glad I didn’t change my mind again and try to go during the day! 2 years ago

Back into it after a week off due to illness – was worried I’d have problems, but I just picked up on the training schedule where I should have been last week and no problem. Actually hit my real stride in there a couple times. The motion at about 8:15/mile feels the most natural/real/fun – now to get to a point where I can maintain that pace! Ah, but not to get ahead of myself – first developing a steady running habit and getting through this training schedule, then I’ll work on picking up the pace over all. 2 years ago

sick again – what’s with this?!
not only is it messing up work and all, but it interrupted what I hoped would be the 2nd wk of the training schedule :P seems like it happens every time I try to get back into regular activity
hoping I can go running tomorrow w/o making myself sick again as I think, besides a somewhat drippy nose (tmi?), I’ve basically recovered 2 years ago

I completed my first week of the about.com 1st 5k Training Schedule!!! I’m fudging a little b/c I haven’t done the cross-training time but I had extra teaching stuff this week which took a bunch of time, so I’m letting myself off the hook a bit. Thinking of swimming tomorrow for it, but if I can’t that’s A-O-K with me! I still did the 3 running days which is better than I’ve done since last summer! awesome!
Here’s to week 2!!!!!!! :D
I’m excited actually!!! 3 years ago

I’ve done 2 out of my 3 runs for this week’s schedule and tonight felt really good (the rain-wet streets and rain-cooled breezes probably helped a bit with this). Have to get my 3rd run in on Friday to keep up with the schedule and I’m determined that I’m going to do it 3 years ago

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I am determined this time
started the about.com Run Your 1st 5K e-mail training schedule and hoping the fact that they e-mail me the schedule for each week will push me forward – I tried to start it a bit ago, but somehow missed the 1st week and tried to continue from where I was – not a good idea when you’ve been sitting around the house for the most part for a few months. So I re-subscribed to start back at the beginning and did the 1st run tonight – had to push myself the whole way but it was manageable and when I finished the last run I still had some energy so that’s good. Pretty good pace to begin with, averaging just under 10min/mile pace for the running bits (it’s a run/walk program initially, with 1 min walks between)
I think I’m already addicted to my Nike+ Sportband – there’s something addicting to tracking everything (she says on the progress tracking website) 3 years ago

yay! I went running!
right now getting out the door in my running shoes is an achievement – had a great run this morning. did my 30 min’s in 3 parts since it’s been so long since I went. The first part was a nice pace – added bonus. so hoping to go 3 more times before next friday! onward ho! hoping to do some walking on in between days. I do waaaay too much sitting around on my non-teaching days – very not good :)
If i can do this goal through to the end of April, I will count it as completed and then in May I think I’ll start playing ultimate frisbee again (double yay!). I admit, I’m giving in to my ego in part by not going now since I’m so embarrassingly out of shape, but I think I would be dying within the first 5 min’s of play anyway, so this’ll be better…eventually :D 3 years ago

had an awesome run last night, though in the middle I was dying. Had to walk for a bit at 20 minutes – probably started out too fast; gotta get used to going with music – that was fun! Finished strong for the 1/2 hour, walked for a minute or so and then did a 3 minute real run which felt so so awesome!!!! I’m still so out of shape, but that felt really really good and I’m hoping hoping hoping to be more regular now. :) 3 years ago

once last week
twice this week
so going for 3 times this coming week
half of my problem right now is sleep patterns b/c it seems early morning and late evening are best in terms of people and vehicle traffic; can’t face a 3 mile run on a track regularly, though I may force myself at least once for pacing sake at some point.
If during break I can make my sleep schedule more regular so that when the new semester starts I’m also getting up early on days I’m not teaching, I think I’ll be able to keep this up too – this is why it’s so hard for me to focus on particular goals – they all seem so interrelated. 3 years ago

Starting back into this goal again, hurray – I was off for 2 1/2 months after being sick this summer which was incredibly frustrating. I tried to start back after I lost the fever and it was so rough on my lungs that I think I became a bit anxious about starting up again. I was thinking today as I was cooling down that my lungs are in such different condition from that last time I tried to run – yikes – couldn’t stop hacking after I finished.
Tonight was actually my 2nd run since restart. I went Saturday and had to walk for 5 minutes halfway through which was disappointing but still much better than I had feared it would be. Tonight I stopped for 30 seconds 1/2 way through but managed to get myself going again at a slow pace; a couple short stops for traffic and lights but no more than 15 seconds here and there – did a bit of extra time on the end to make up for those. Still going to wait another week or so for the frisbee. Wanted to go do yoga tomorrow but I’m thinking it might be too much too soon, especially since I’m now coupling my runs w/a 100 push ups and 200 hundred situps graduated schedule. Thinking maybe I’ll do these workouts this week and then add the yoga next week and maybe frisbee the following week.
This is semi-rambling but also just trying to keep track of my thoughts. 3 years ago

bah humbug! I’ve been sick for the entire past week! The fever finally broke Friday night so yesterday I walked to the store (20 min walk one way). Walked really slowly, but I had to sit down and rest going both ways because my head was starting to feel funny as I was walking, and then I gave up and got a taxi back b/c I felt so lousy! Still feeling kind of funky today and so it’ll be at least a few more days before I can get back into this goal. :( I thought I was doing so well there for a bit too. Almost wondering if all this coughing can be considered exercise though—really feel like I’ve developed my abdominal muscles. 3 years ago

so this week has so far been 2 sessions of Ultimate Frisbee – not what I’d planned but lots of fun and /tons/ of running. Forces me to sprint much faster than I think I would if I just told myself to and more often than likewise – for this kind of thing it’s a lot more fun running in a game than just on the street, though it doesn’t have that steady/constant sustained effort required out on the road. In the end I’m thinking it’s going to help me w/my speed a bit. It’s been a while since I played so after Sunday’s 2 hr pick-up game, today (Tuesday) my legs and especially my quads were killing me when we paused for a water break – don’t notice it as much when I’m on the field and especially not when I’m running so lots easier to push myself then. But then as we walked to dinner after my feet were killing me—I know the field is hard, but I’m thinking my running shoes are basically dead. Very thankful a friend is bringing me my new ones in a few weeks. Tomorrow I’m going to try to go for a run during lunch and then go to yoga in the evening. Scheduling all this physical activity is really making a dent on my summer class planning time though, so I think I need to be a bit careful – how to balance – this is ever my biggest question!!! 3 years ago

I did this 2 weeks ago and then missed all last week, so next week will be the test. This week I’ve gone running twice and gone to yoga classes twice, so I’ve already reached my goal for this week…although only part really. I really want to be running 3-4 times each week and then do some additional training on the side. The plan is to run tomorrow, take Saturday as a rest day, and then play Ultimate Frisbee on Sunday… and then I have to make sure to keep going next week!!! 3 years ago
