How I did it: I realized after about 20 years of piddling away my money on "investments" that betting on the come just can't be made to work for me. 

At my level of existence I must always count on a sure thing, or as sure a thing as there is. I am about 40% in the most conservative investments in my 401K. They may go down, and they have over the past two years..... but they won't evaporate without the wheels coming off for everybody.... I would be 15% ahead at the moment on those "investments" if I had been simply holding cash..... that is my from now on strategy.... let everyone else gamble. I'll take the certainty of passbook returns...... and I'll accrue any added wealth I can by the sweat of my brow....

Lessons & tips: Don't gamble unless you can afford to lose big.

    Last week a good friend came to work at the company where I am 1 month ago

    I worked with him a few years, then I worked for him a few years, then I worked for someone who worked for him several years. When we first met he for some reason decided to take me under his wing a bit. It was this guy who finally convinced me to get started in the 401K at work. That was a bit of magic to my life. I am so indebted to this guy it isn’t funny.. plus, after he got me started he has always allowed me open access to his thoughts about financial matters. I have always believed what he said unquestioningly. He has been right a bunch. Bottom line is I owe this guy, big.

    MrAverage Who Thinks That Life is but a Dream

    I really mean to improve my investments both in future contributions and in existing balance 1 month ago

    I am totally lacking in wisdom here. I am such a hodgepodge investor… I have roughly half in conservative mutual funds and they are coming along well now that the market is back to boom boom. The other half and my contributions going forward are into cash reserves…. The yield on cash (roughly zero) is so much better than any investment I have ever made I really need some wisdom! Cash looks like wisdom from my vantage point.
