One of my phones is programmed to function in German. The other in Italian. That way I learn the commands in 2 languages.

That means “I’m sorry” in German. The interesting thing about it is that its literal translation is “It does me agony.”

German shopping carts require a deposit of 1 euro to unlock them from the rest of the carts (really good reason to return the cart to where it belongs) I only had a 2 euro coin and a 0.50 euro coin. So when a lady, returning her cart, asked what was wrong, I held up my 2 euro and said “zwei”. She promptly got out her purse and traded me her cart and a 1 euro coin for my 2 euro coin. When I got to the check out tonight, the cashier only spoke to me in German. I got the jist of all she said but missed the zwei on the front end of my total… I also used my German to help the lady in front of me that was short change. “Wie viel?” I asked. “How much?” 1 euro cent. I had that. So that made me feel good that I could practice my German and help someone out.

I had to call Sony Germany today about my camera. It wasn’t working right and Sony America said I had to call Sony Germany to get it serviced. I don’t think the tech at Sony American understood what he was doing when he told me that… When I called Sony Germany, it was all in German. I have enough German I got to the camera menus but the different brands here threw me off. I finally got to a person who spoke a little English, only to find out I had the wrong division. He was nice and told me the number order I needed to follow to get to the right one. When I finally got to that representative, I asked: “Sprechen Sie Englisch?”. The answer was “Schelcht” which is bad or badly. I finally did get to an English-speaking agent, and found out that they can’t take care of me… It’s a good thing I did have some German or I wouldn’t have gotten that far.
