When I was little, my dad and I read the comic-book version of the story (which was probably not age-appropriate for me for many, many reasons, but it gave me a chance to learn the story). I was inspired to see the actual performance by a WNYC program. Right now, I’m working on getting familiar with opera music in general.
How to see Wagner's Ring Cycle
How I did it: We went to the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center on four of the last five Saturdays. The Ring Cycle is composed of four operas, totalling about 18 hours. We didn't get the $650 a seat tickets and actually preferred the standing room. You lean on a velvet railing, and can see perfectly for $35 a ticket. Plus, there is room to stretch and move around.

Unfortunately, my aunt passed away and I will miss the last two operas to attend the funeral. This whill have to wait until the Met’s new production next decade.
Elderbear is subverting the dominant paradigm. kickn' back ...
I don’t know when. But a life goal is to see the entire ring cycle during the Bayreuth Festival. With enough additional $$$, I’ll take in all the operas. Gonna take some doing though – one ticket (from Australia) for the entire festival, lodging and transport is about 13 grand!!!
