Goats and weddings DO mix! 2 years ago

My brother’s second marriage seems to be a happy event. I did not want to buy a traditional wedding gift though, as I had already done that for the first marriage 3 years earlier. So instead I got them a pair of goats through Heifer International. What a hit that was. They were happy because 1) it was for charity in their names and 2) they did not need to find room for something else in their small house. I was happy for the same reasons and I felt I had done something meaningful!

I've done this for school! 2 years ago

At school, we decided to collect money for Heifer. We collected money for the big Ark ($5000) Each class was asked to collect 330 dollars, and we ended up wth 6,758 dollars. It is totally worth it, and an awesome feeling!

soon! 2 years ago

I have such spotty internet access right now that I am going to put this on hold until I get back to Texas and things are more reliable.

Why? 3 years ago

My brother is getting married for the second time and I don’t want to buy him something he doesn’t need. Therefore, in honour of him and his bride-to-be, I am buying them a pair of goats for a present.

Heifer.org 3 years ago

You can donate goats, rabbits, chickens, llamas and all sorts of animals through Heifer. This is my favorite charity. They teach the recipients how to use the gifts in a way that multiplies the effect.

I now give gifts of donations to Heifer and only wish to receive same. There are many well deserving charities in the world, but for me Heifer.org is at the top of the list!

this is so great 3 years ago

Strange, but Good 4 years ago

My grandparents ask us to spend money we would spend on a gift for them over on www.oxfamunwrapped.com so last year me and my siblings got a goat, and an allotment on their behalf I think.

Personally, I think long term it’s better to give regular donations to Oxfam (Something I plan to do when out of debt myself) but it’s good that you can choose exactly where your money is going.

Will include this as part of weaning ceremony 4 years ago

Saw this idea online somewhere, maybe on breastfeeding.com?

But after weaning my youngest, and having the luxury of being able to provide food for my children, will donate (and ask family to help) a goat to family who cannot afford the same.

So fantastic! 4 years ago

My in-laws started this tradition for us for the winter holidays—we just get presents for the kids, then the adults get together and buy livestock for africa/latin america.

We do it through: Heifer Project International which despite its name doesn’t only deal in heifers, you can choose to donate poultry, goats, as well as cows, and you can choose the country. They then not only donate the animal, but all the means to support it, and train the family on how to raise the animals in a sustainable way—ensuring that the family remains self-sustaining. They then encourage the gifting of offspring to neighbors, so that whole villages become self-sustaining.

They also publish some great children’s books describing how the gifts have helped families (providing food, income, income for housing, shoes, school supplies, etc.) and in so doing explaining the meaning of charity. Check out:
