I am beginning to look forward to this day every week. I can’t believe I let several months pass since I got here without going to the local market. And now I can’t miss a week! Not only do I contribute to the local economy but the place is filled with all this energy… ok, maybe it’s just me that I’m ecstatic every time I go. It really makes you feel alive!

We’ve been a couple of times and were recognized by the guys from last year. The veggies and strawberries have been wonderful plus we bought some plants from a guy who seemed thrilled to talk to us about them!

This is becoming increasingly easier now that spring is finally. Here the Farmer’s Market at Landsdowne finally opens in May and everything there is local…

I am excited about being part of a CSA this year! Sometime in June will be the first harvest. The shares will last until late October or early November. Can’t wait!

My husband had the day off so we decided to take a little trip. We went to a town 75 miles away, visited two museums and their gift shops, and ate lunch and dinner in local restaurants. We spent about $125, not enough to keep anyone open; but we had a fun day and came away with souvenirs and full bellies.
Awesome! Today we bought most of our produce at the local co-op. It wasn’t all grown locally, but there isn’t very much growing at this time of year. At least we supported the community and got some organic food!

we’re trying to shop from local businesses as much as possible. I heard a news story before xmas which said that if you don’t buy from your local shops, most likely they won’t be there next year. It’s so easy and often less expensive to shop online, but that doesn’t help anyone around here. We’re able to pay all our bills and still save some money; I think we need to put something back into the local economy. We’ve been making local choices when we eat out, but it’s time to do more.

I have 1/2 acre in the city and I’m thinking about a few 3-4 free range hens for eggs. Those would be some local eggs!
As soon as it’s feasible I’m tearing out the lawn and putting in a garden and chicken manure would be great for the soil.
This is the second year with the CSA. I also hit the farmer’s market and local businesses whenever I can. I could be doing “better”, but the idea was to develop the habit, not go completely off the grid. I’m also freezing and canning and baking more, which are all great skills that I’m happy to have in my toolbox.
