Current goal: zero debt by end of 2009.
How I did it: After making decent sized payments ($200-300) a month for a couple of years and not retiring the credit card debt I'd accumulated from graduate school tuition (what wasn't covered by student loans) and dental care bills, I took on 3 extra jobs this summer to pay it all down. I spent my two-week vacation from from my full time job, and one evening a week and many of my summer weekends doing added freelance work. Every check went towards credit card bills and now I've added $1,000 to my savings. I gave up much of my leisure time this summer, but it was worth it, especially in this economy. I'll also have more of my monthly paychecks, now that a portion isn't going to credit card payments.
Lessons & tips: Being able to make the largest payments possible - $1,000-&2,000 at a time is how I cleared my credit cards despite the interest.
so i have paid off 3 of my credit cards so far and am halfway paying off the next. i have 2 more credit cards and i will be able to pay off them within then next 5 months. What i’m doing is paying the minimum payments on all cards, but then putting $150.00 from each paycheck(which is 2 times a month) towards one credit card that has the least amount of money-then paying it off and putting that minimum payment money towards the next one and paying it off. It is working great so far and i’m feeling more free of debt then i have in a long time. It’s just hard to keep your spending to a minimum while doing this.
Katya is working . . . as per usual
Well, I finally managed to get the largest portion of my debt (about $6500 worth) refinanced to about 6% APR. So, with the payement schedule I’m on I should clear all of my credit card debt in about four years . . . .
However, I did not factor in when I refinanced that my student loans will start requiring payments in less than a month. Also, I have missed a large amount of work because of illness, eating through my safety savings to pay rent and bills, so now I’m back to living off of credit until my health sorts out. Sometimes I wonder if there’s any end to this . . .
I took on some extra freelance work this summer; while its meant a bit less time for summer fun, I should have all my credit card debt retired by September.
I just paid off two cards with the check from one freelance job.
Im not mad that I have to pay for them.. Im just pissed at the stinkin interest rates.. I swear its feels like im never gonna be debt free.
I paid some of them off just before end of 2007 and ran them up a bit, will be paying them off this mth . . . . for sure :)
