it's a verrrrrrrry tentative 'worth doing'  — 1 year ago

    Worth doing!

I say it’s worth doing because I’ve just finished it and wouldn’t want to think that the last three months I’ve spent on it have been for nothing. If you reallllllly like Dickens, Victorian literature and culture, and/or have a lot of leisure time, you might get something out of this.
That being said, I’ll say that I found it slow-moving, verbose (even by Victorian standards), and densely packed (at times I’d finish five pages and be unable to go on). Dickens certainly does his share of rambling in this one. And the title character is incredibly dull. Some of the supporting characters are mildly interesting and colourful, but DC himself is mind-numbingly boring at times. In my opinion, the worst (beating DC’s criminally weak and neglectful mother by a mere hair), however, is Dora, a character so irritatingly ditzy and stupid she makes Kelly Bundy from ‘Married With Children’ look like Marie Curie in comparison.
The book has withstood the test of time, I guess, and is part of many literary canons, so reading it does perhaps increase awareness of Anglo and Western culture. But proceed with caution (this is not a page-turner), and make sure you have a pillow handy in case you nod off.

This is taking forever!  — 1 year ago

    Worth doing!

I started reading this book three months ago, and I’ve been proceeding at a snail’s pace. I normally like Victorian literature and have enjoyed some of Dickens’s other works (A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations). But the rambling style of this one, the length (870 pp.) and the dullness of the main character (the book is sort of interesting when his life sucks, but it’s dreadful when things are going well for him) are considerable obstacles. I have fewer than 300 pp. to go. Let’s hope the pace picks up…

    Not worth it!

Started out great, got boring at the middle, got even more boring at the end. (rolls eyes at the cheesy ending)

Just a few more  — 1 year ago

    Not worth it!

pages to go. Well, actually about 250 more pages but it’s progress. From 850 down to 250. If only I could kick myself into finishing it.

    Not worth it!

It takes forever to finish. I started reading it almost 2 months ago and I’m halfway through. Though I must say I noticed that after one point in the book, it now takes me considerable effort to finish even just one chapter.

I was at the dentist’s office this afternoon and I found myself more willing to watch The Weather Channel than read it.

Nevertheless, I’m an extreme J person so what I start, I’ll finish. Hopefully, DC redeems itself in the end. Or I get a longer attention span.
