dre_17 procrastinating like no other!
I read about art therapy not too long ago and really took to the idea of combining psychotherapy with art. I’m doing an internship with community arts at my college to do art therapy at rehabilitation center. Also researching how the scene for art therapy is in japan.

Im 44, a single mother, trained as a filmmaker. I want to do some work that is more tactile and satisfying and wondered about art therapy.
I have no idea if there is much work out there..?
I dont want to land in another career where it is incredibly difficult to make a living.
Id appreciate some feedback from anyone who knows or is an art therapist

I’m at Suny Oswego right now studying art therapy. Well.. they only have it as a minor here, so I haven’t taken any classes that actually are Art Therapy classes, only Art and Psychology classes. I am excited to actually learn more about it. If anyone has already graduated and is an Art Therapist, could you tell me how you like it? Was it difficult to find a job? I live in upstate NY and its funny when I tell people what I want to do, they have NO clue at all what I am talking about, I am nervous there will not be any positions for me in my area after I get my degree! I am really excited though because I have changed my major so many times and Art Therapy is the ONLY choice that I know for sure with out any questions I will want to do for the rest of my life..it involves art and helping people..how could it get any better?

I’ve always had an interest in art and how peoples minds work :) I’m currently studying Bachelor of Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne (It involves, creative writing, theatre, media and visual arts) my next move is to do a post graduate masters degree in art therapy. There’s only one school back I NZ that does art therapy and they said that with the degree I’m going to get in a few years I will be eligible for the course :) I don’t really want to go back to New Zealand for it though… I’d love to go to the states to study, I should start saving now :S

I went to Lesley University for grad school and studied art therapy. It was a fabulous expereince and though I will be paying off school loans forever, it was worth it. I’m willing to give info to anyone who is considering pursuing art therapy.

...at Marywood University. It’s an art-based program, so you create art in every single class session! But don’t be fooled by that, for the clinical piece is also quite good. I chose that program because it leads you to become a strengths-based practitioner, as opposed to some schools that use a ‘medical model’ and teach a deficit-based approach to practice. I prefer to focus on a client’s strengths in lieu of problems… and they like it, too.
www.arttherapy.org
is the official American Art Therapy Association website. Very comprehensive and lists accredited schools.
We need more Art Therapists!
