I realised as soon as I started looking at the pages that make up a Wordpress theme, that the first thing I needed to do was to learn more about PHP. That way I can understand the building blocks that make up a Wordpress page.
This is important as it means I can then build a site from scratch to individual requirements rather than downloading someone else’s template and making changes to it – then hoping for the best.
It’s a lot to do, and I’m also concerned that it could make my life somewhat unbalanced, but I’m determined to do it!

My aim on this is to be able to use Wordpress as a tool for helping small businesses to become more effective online.
I would like to learn how Wordpress works, how a Wordpress site is put together, and how to customise a Wordpress site for a small business who may want to have a blog or just use Wordpress as a great CMS. I also would like to be able to offer the facilities for a small business to create their own podcast!
Lots to learn, but I’m ready to do it!

I love it, and it’s so versatile. I love my new layout, and the best part about it is I didn’t have to have someone else do it!!

That was easy! Well, I just learned how to install it. Now my new goal is to learn php (‘cause I know html and css pretty well). Now I have to tinker and learn how to customize wordpress.
I went through two or three quick tutorials before I found a visual tutorial (flash) right here:

‘kay all, happy blogging.

So I installed mysql and learning how to make a simple data base. It was really silly, went to the irc channel to find out why I couldn’t long on to the mysql server just to find out that I was entering the command incorrectly (duh).
My setup (for those that are interested, if not, just skip this). I am using the latest version of Ubuntu on an 850 mhz laptop with 128mb of ram).
I spent about an hour doing this, then I left that to take care of other things and never came back to it. Not as much as I wanted to accomplish. Baby steps though, baby steps
Going to dedicate 2 hours to this. Then going to force myself to read at least 40 pages of MCP exam material (SNORE). I have been neglecting my goal to earn an MCSE for far too long. Are these way too many geeky goals? I really have to get out more often.
m’kay, good night to all (or good day, afternoon, evening, which ever may apply).

I am trying to learn Wordpress first using Linux on my laptop (ubuntu) I can install Apache2 and php5. And I’ve installed Mysql but can’t figure out how to use it. Looked online for documentation but most of what I read recommended to use cpanel (which isn’t free) the rest is pretty confusing. I purchased the a book on learning Mysql and php5. Lets see how that goes.

I’ve enjoyed learning Wordpress (and all the great plug-ins that are out there to extend Wordpress! I’ve gone on to help others install it and get it running! Definitely worth doing!

Learning Wordpress is definitely worthwhile! being a web developer, I often have to build a website that is easily updateable by my clients. Wordpress is perfect for building your first website and even the more complex ones! Good luck all! Mic
