Stop using cliches

Just started noticing... 2 years ago

...That I use a bunch of “buzz words” that are “unique” to me. They aren’t really cliches, since they are usually single words, but they are words that I use that really don’t mean anything, and only serve to fill space when I am in a conversation, or to transition from one paragraph to another when I am writing.

Here is a field guide to the catch phrases that I want to stop using:

1. Anyway – I use this a lot when I am writing. I started noticing this a year or two ago, that half of my paragraphs would start with the word “anyway” because I really didn’t know how to transition from one paragraph to another. Now, I use the word “anyhoo” to begin every paragraph – which is much better.

2. Cool – I use this a lot in conversation to let someone know that I have been listening. This goes in place of an actual substantive response to what the person said. I get into trouble occasionally because someone will say something like: “My grandma died yesterday” and I will say “Cool” when in fact someone’s grandmother dying is not cool… unless she was a total bitch. I think I will replace the word “cool” with total silence. That way I still don’t actually have to formulate a substantive response.

These are the only two Layne “buzz words” that come to mind at the moment. I’ll write some more down in the near future, because I’m sure there are more of them.

Addendum

3. That’s beautiful! I use this a lot instead of “That’s awesome!”, and kind of in a sarcastic way. Kind of like when something is so stupid it’s awesome, then I will use “That’s beautiful” – I need to find some sort of example of this. But I do use it a lot.

This is going remarkably much better than I had anticipated. Every time I hear a cliche’ now, I cringe a little. I have all but eliminated them from my own conversation and writing.

I'm ...sick and tired... of cliches! 4 years ago

OK I’m really fed up with using cliches! I’m going to grab the bull by the horns and stop the madness
