January 1 & 2 The weather on the 1st was peculiar. Trades stopped and winds died or blowed in southeasterly direction much of the day. SO2 levels in the park were so bad the visitor center was shut down part of the day. You could taste the air. Could not tell what weather was like due to noxious cloud. Today better, but air still had taste in the morning. Afternoon not so, but overcast. Whatever that meant. Didn’t seem like rainclouds.
January 3 A lot more wind today. It is very warm and sunny and the plume is not hovering around hale mahinui.
January 4 sun and clouds, no rain. Warm, then only somewhat warm. Warm enough for tee shirt and sandals, chilly enough for a light sweater.

December 1 beautiful
December 2-3 beautiful
December 4 rain in the morning, sunny afternoon
December 5 – 10 gorgeous weather. warm, sunny, bright, dry. Temp high 70’s and maybe even 80
December 11, 12, 13, 14 temps have varied but the weather has been clear. Except the 13th when the volcano kicked up lots of vog and the trades kept it local.
December 15 & 16 great weather continues. chilly morning and evening here on the volcano, warm mid day. trades gently swaying ohias. roof going up on the pavilion.
December 17 sunshine, some blue skies that come and go as the trades are coming and going
December 18 some sunshine and some gray sky. Looked a bit like rain but it stayed dry and that’s good cause we’re still working on the deck
December 19 the rains came and the dogs got wet and dirty, but we took a mid day hot tub soak
December 20 -26 Gorgeous days! Sunny! Even warm! Christmas was spectacular. Having a hard time getting mr M to takea break from treehouse as great weather is needed for finishes…
December 27 sun comes and goes. Day began in this damp way but there wasn’t actual rain, just a lot of wet air
December 28 rained in the night and was dry all day there was some vog but not much and it went away
December 29 It rained all night I think and then the sun came out and came and went all day and it rained a little bit in the day but only a little

November 1 a bit on the cool side, but no rain so far today. had sun, and skies were blue just a bit ago. It’s now leaning towards noon with white sky and energetic trade winds.
November 2 cool in the morning with lots of sunshine. a mild and mellow day ending in light light mist
November 3 -5 days are mixed sun and mist. some rain. I forget which. the 5th we went into Hilo
November 6 misty, then sunny for a couple hours, then rain, then mist – no more sun til tomorrow it seems.
November 7 – 8 pretty and warm for the most part
November 9 so far overcast and chilly. I made soup
November 10 overcast and chilly, rain in the very early morning. I made bread pudding. About 2 pm thunder and lightning hit with heavy pelting rain for about 20 minutes, then it lightened to more normal rain. The dogs went nuts.
November 11 today was supposed to be a big storm but was sunny and then slightly wet
November 12 thought today would also be nice but no. cloudy turned to thunder and lightning with deluge. The water runs off the roof too fast to flow through the gutters and spills out in waterfalls all along the edge.
November 13 Rain all day. no sun. Maybe sometimes the rain was light,and there may have been a few minutes here and there with no rain but it was 99% rainy today in Volcano
November 14 -15 -16 still all kinds of rain. day and night rain. all rain all the time. not heavy though. just wet.
November 17 It’s still raining. I’m going to find the sun.
November 18 Yesterday we found the run just down the road. We returned in the evening, driving right into the rain cloud and the continuous precipitation. Yes, it is still raining. But there was sun in the afternoon
November 19 – 20 some rain, a soupcon of sun here and there. 20 very chilly on the mountain.

The rest of November is missing because I was away

October 1 – I saw the sun a tiny little bit. It has rained today. The dogs were soaked. I was soaked. We unloaded the pavilion and the packing material was drenched. I am shivering because I am not all the way dry even though I changed my clothes. So I took Emergen-C with zinc and I am going to bed with the sound of rain on the metal roof that is rather intense. It is very much the rain forest.
October 2 – rain and more rain
October 3 – sunshine and almost zero rain. some fine mist and just a little of that.
Ten days have gone by. We have not had any real storms, but we had a couple of very rainy days. One was yesterday and we left volcano and went to Kona. The wet weather extended from somewhere on the Hilo side all the way to Honaunau, and that is unusual. By the time we were a bit north of Honaunau the skies cleared and we were warm. In the last ten days, two have been sunny and bright. Three have been fairly wet. The others were mixed, with a couple of voggy days. On voggy days, there are no trades and the cloud from Halema’uma’u settles bleakly over the ground, hovering there. It is worse farther down the mountain. Sometimes here we are above it, and that is nice for us, not so nice for the towns down at 2000 feet.
October 13 fine rain all afternoon, bright morning with a little sun.
October 14-18 The days have been mixed sun and rain. Most days a little actual rain not just mist, and quite a bit of sunshine as well. The weather is actually gorgeous. If you have ever visited Hawaii and been in the sunny rain, you know what I mean. Although this morning at Farmer’s market I got a little wet. Now at 10 am it is bright and sunny, with the ohias swaying their hula in the trades.
October 19 – 20 It has rained. There may have been some sun yesterday, and if there was sun today, I missed out.
October 21-22 What happened yesterday. I think plenty of rain. today has been nice. tiny mist some of the time, lots of sun. I was in Hilo in the morning. Came back to bright!!
Oct 23-29 I am bad at this. Weather has been alternately rain and sun. No days without either. But gradual warming trend. A couple days in there without the trades, meaning vog.
Oct 30 pretty nice nearly all day. Trades are back.
Oct 31 day began chilly, with brisk trades. See lots of sway out in the forest. Sun was out before 8 and fluffy clouds kite across the sky.

September 1 – damp with some sun
September 2 – bright and warm, but rain in the night
September 3 begins warm and turns to pineapple rain by 11. Down the mountain it was raining really hard this morning early. Warm though.
Sept 4 – 6 – wet. a little sun, and wet.
Sept 7 – morning damp and misty, changing to bright blue skies and a warm and lovely day.
Besides the comment entry I had to make when I couldn’t edit this, I missed a lot of days.

Weather for September: We had over a week of sunshine. Sun everyday. No rain even at night, or just mist at night. Then three days ago, the rain came back. It stayed two or three days, then diminished. Yesterday was nice, then the rain came in the evening, and today, Sunday the 20th has been about 6% sun and 36% rain, with clouds being the remainder.

Wow I suck at this. I missed a lot of days. And I don’t remember what the weather was in most of them.

the purpose of this journal is to satisfy my own curiosity about the weather here in volcano. Where I have lived in the past the weather tended to follow a progression through the seasons that involved rain mostly in the spring, and fog in the warmer months, with some outrageous heat at both beginning and end of summer.

Here, it has felt like winter in July and August. I’ve thought about this goal, and now I am just going to do it.

Today is August 10, and tropical storm Felicia is due more or less tomorrow. I say more or less as it began as a hurricane, went to a tropical storm, and has been downgraded to a tropical depression.

today, August 10: mist with very little rain and sun coming an going throughout the day. moods on the job site were up. Temperature in the mid seventies in the day, chilly tonight. define chilly: Iphone says 73. Feels like 63. iphone predicts all rain tomorrow.

August 11: day dawns bright and blue, with slight breeze. Becomes very warm, feeling very tropical, even on the mountaintop. After five, slight misty rain. So much for hurricane Felicia, AKA tropical storm, AKA tropical depression…

August 12: awakened at 4:30 with smell of sulfur in the air. Trades had slowed or stopped and volcano fumes were gathering. Closed windows and now at 7:30 sun is bright, trades are back. Air is not warm and tropical as it was yesterday, but pleasant.

August 13: day warm and bright. it rained in the night, but there was little if any rain all day, even pineapple rain. Lots of sunlight, trades blowing sweetly.

August 14: it rained morning and by afternoon was pretty. Stayed dry into the night, when I went coqui hunting and actually caught two of the noisy critters.

August 15th: mostly sunny a few high clouds, rain the night before.

August 16th altogether a very pretty day. cool in the morning, coolish all day, with some clouds, quite a bit of sun. Pleasant!

August 17th through 23rd: Today we had morning rain, and in the night times we have had some or more than some rain, but days have been sunny with morning rain the last two days. evening mist and some afternoon mist. This morning the wettest by far, and here at 9:30 am the sun is already out and sky becoming blue.

August 24 – 27 The weather continues much the same. New tropical storms pass south of here, and ahead of them and behind them is sunshine and warmer weather. Yesterday some mild rain off and on with sunshine. Today, it is colder, and dryer. Tiny mist off and on, sunshine off and on, now nearing 4:30 it is all cloudy and misty. Will be a nice night for the fireplace.

August 28, a wet Friday. All day it misted, and in the night it is sometimes more than mist but mostly relentless mist. Not chilly though – Ok outdoors working in a tee shirt. Wet enough to want a hat and cover to walk far.

The last three days of August were damp with some sun, and sunny with some damp.
