make eye contact more often

Thanks to the people who have cheered me on this goal. This one is particularly difficult for me. That’s because my Asian culture taught me to avert my eyes down and away, as a sign of respect and homage to people.

However, in America, people feel more comfortable by people who look at you sincerely. I’m a very sincere person, but ironically, I guess I don’t come off that way all the time, because of my habit of not looking directly at the person. I probably look self-absorbed when I look down, and disinterested when I look away! But I’m actively listening, I am screaming on the inside! How frustrating, as this hurts my tenuous social skills.

So, now I’m trying to undo many formative years of what my mom taught me to do.

Making eye contact shows that you have confidence and are comfortable in your own skin!!!!!! Plus you can get to know people much better!!!!!!

any worthy exercise anyone can suggest?

I learned to do this in Junior high school, it is suppose to help you learn. It works! When I look people in the eye I see more about them and hear and remember what they are saying. Just a bonus reason, one day i was looking down and not up and i came across a co-worker with an open zipper, more embarrasing for him or me? But if I had been looking up I could have escaped unnoticed.

Definitely worth doing :D

well everytime I talk to people I’m trying to make more eye contact – I never realised how much I don’t look at people when I talked to them before

i honestly dont know where i’ve been looking my whole life, because now that ive actually made it a point to make eye contact w/ people i realize that everyone is already waiting for eye contact! it really makes a difference when you look in someones eyes. its hard for me to be totally comfortable w/ holding eye contact, but im getting better!

ive always had problems making and maintaining eye contact, and i dont know why. i feel incredibly insecure when i really look into someones eyes. however, i think that eye contact is the key to good communication, something im not the best at all the time. im starting by trying to make eye contact with the costumers i encounter at work. its already made my interactions friendlier and more personal.
