The online consensus is that Krav Maga is the most effective martial art for street level self defense, and it only takes 6 mos. to learn. I’m not gonna join for a while because I feel like indeed a better fitness level but its good to have this incentive to get fit. I’m gonna re-start my exercise routine on Monday. 2 weeks ago

One of the best places in Austin is right around the corner from my house but I simply cannot afford the classes. I am finally physically able enough to even think about doing this but now my ‘fiscal’ health is in the way. Arrghh. I might go talk to them and see what they can recommend, I dunno. 2 months ago

How I did it: The camp I attended this summer offered a self-defense class. I was apprehensive at first because I was unsure of exactly what self-defense entailed (movies aren't always 100% accurate) but once I got into it, it was a blast. There's nothing quite as empowering as learning how to kick someone's ass if they're attacking you.
We learned everything from the three stances (neutral, cautious, and defensive) to elbowing, kicks, and how to break free if someone grabs you from behind. At the end of each class the pads came on and punching bags were brought out so we could practice what we'd learned.
On the final day of the class, a guy covered in padding came in so that anyone who wanted to had the opportunity to run through a stimulation where he grabs you and you have to break free. Of course I jumped at the chance to beat the shit of a guy who looked like a red Michelin man!
I definitely walked out of there at the end of the week with higher self-confidence and a sense of security knowing I can protect myself should I ever need to. If you have the opportunity to take self-defense (man or woman) you should do so! It was a great experience.

I hope a situation never arises where I’d have to defend myself, but it’s very empowering to know that I could beat the shit out of someone if necessary. 9 months ago

I thought it would be something worth learning after I’ve finished uni and have some time on my hands. I know my sister has to learn some for a trip she’s taking next year, so I might go with her, or if I’m not home by then I could take the class she goes to if she finds it helpful 14 months ago
