I’d say I’m flossing “often” but perhaps not dutifully two times a week, which is pretty gross I guess. Should be easier to do. Back to work.

Get good floss! 18 months ago

I finally used up my stockpile of dental floss – except for a little travel pack for my purse, very cute – and so I was in dire need of new floss. I haven’t spent money on floss since I don’t know when – maybe 10 years. Do you know how much selection there is? I stood there in the aisle for more than 5 minutes, picking which one to get. In the end I settled on a $5 pack of 45 yards (supposed 3-month supply) of Johnson & Johnson Reach mint stuff in a clear package that looked like blue rope.

This new floss is woven and stretchy and absolutely fantastic. Not at all uncomfortable to floss, not one bit, and the mint flavour was great. If you have any problem getting motivated to do this goal, get a good floss – spend money on it. Once you’re in the habit and your gums are used to it, you can go back to cheaper stuff if you still want to.

probably a good idea 18 months ago

because i’m not the best at caring for my teeth.

I read today 19 months ago

that flossing is the single best thing you can do for your health. My dentist roommate said it is more effective than brushing, and apparently the plaque on our teeth goes into our systems and clogs our arteries. Gross, huh? The article said that flossing will add years to your life.

I went to the dentist today. 21 months ago

It was $100 more than usual, but that’s ‘cause she put in a capital expense for some swanky new X ray equipment that goes straight to a computer program called VixWin. I got a panoramic X ray, and 6 (6!) x-rays of various angles of my mouth. Everything’s fine, the sensitivity of the replaced fillings I had two years ago has long subsided, which calls to reckon that I had not been there in a year and a half, when it was still sensitive. I also said “hey, I started flossing!” and she said “very good, I can see that!”

So I got what tartar I had and the coffee/wine stains blasted off with baking soda, and I was out of there in half an hour. I am a very happy customer. One day I may consider getting my eyeteeth (canines, the fangs, you know) whitened – why they are not as white as the incisors and molars, I do not know, is it the same for you? – but having the wisdom tooth taken care of, the fillins replaced, a permanent retainer/mouthguard against further grinding – I am thankful to live in this day and age. A century ago, perhaps my teeth would be falling out. OTOH, while I had very soft teeth as a kid, the dentist and assistant said I have excellent teeth now. Maybe I’d still be doing fine if I lived a hundred years ago. I’m still glad I’m not.

Must floss. You only have your health, and teeth.

Got scolded on the weekend 22 months ago

I’m apparently supposed to floss more often than once a week! But I figure it’s a good schedule to start with.
