TGFrom catherine's daughter, 09-27-12

From the back of the card:

CLARENCE BUCKINGHAM MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN, BY NIGHT, GRANT PARK

Built as a memorial to her brother Clarence, a patron and trustee of the Art Institute, Kate Buckingham presented this largest fountain of its kind in the world to the City of Chicago. It is located in Grant Park and by night, when colored lights play over its sparkling jets of water, it is an unusually beautiful sight.

Another very cool antique card from catherine’s daughter! According to Wikipedia this fountain was dedicated in 1927 and is still one of the largest fountains in the world.

Thanks (very belatedly) for the card, K! :)3 weeks ago

TGFrom Simon, 09-13-12

Another one that isn’t a postcard, but close enough :)

Simon sent me this card when he sent me a couple T-shirts last fall. The photo on the card is one that he took himself.

Looks like a gorgeous place, Simon- thanks! 1 month ago

TGFrom красивейшая Богиня, 09-10-12

From the back of the card:

Great British Breakfast

Well, parts of it look great to me! (I don’t like eggs or tomatoes).

A cool card from the emu. I photographed it on a tv tray so it really does look like breakfast being served up :)

Thanks for the card, красивейшая Богиня!

And thanks to whoever invented cut and paste- digging up those Cyrillic characters would have been a pain ;)2 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 08-30-12

From the back of the card:

Paris, panoramique Montparnasse

An interesting perspective of the Eiffel Tower and surrounding area in Paris. Littlesoul must like those hills in Paris, because earlier in the year she earlier sent me a card from Montmartre (which is also done in the same unusual square format and sepia tones).

And here I though you usually were looking for the low points in Paris, ma chérie ;)

Thanks, C! 4 months ago

TGFrom A_butterfly_kiss, 08-25-12

A stunning aerial shot of Mt. Vesuvius from her trip to Italy. I’d love to go see the volcano and Pompeii someday!

Thanks, A! :)4 months ago

TGFrom sue820, 08-25-12

A card from Sue with some beautiful photos and fun facts from Georgia.

Georgia is the only state that I’m not totally sure if I’ve ever been in ;) I know that I was within a few miles but I’m not sure whether we ever actually crossed the border. As near as I can tell, we didn’t. So it’s still one of the 17 states on my to visit list.

Thanks for the card, Sue! :)4 months ago

TGFrom TechKat, 08-2012

From the back of the card:

CHICAGO

Established in 1864 and named after President Lincoln, Lincoln Park became the city’s first public playground. The park extends from North Avenue all the way to Hollywood Avenue and is home to the Lincoln Park Zoo, a number of museums, beaches and the Lincoln Park Conservatory.

I’ve been there, although it’s been a while! Just north of the zoo is the Chicago Academy of Sciences (now the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum), which was one of my favorite field trips I took with the Science Club in high school.

Thanks for the card, Kat. 5 months ago

TGFrom wraiths82, 08-03-12

From the back of the card:

Florida, a great place to visit!

Two Florida cards in a row- that’s quite a coincidence, especially since they were from two different 43ers and they’re the only Florida cards I’ve received out of the 50-something I’ve posted here in the last two years!

Thanks, wraiths! :)6 months ago

TGFrom ThorsDottir, 07-20-12

From the back of the card:

Dining out in Florida

Yum! I guess it’ll be BYO meals when I finally get around to a Florida trip ;)

Thanks for the card!, A :)6 months ago

TGFrom nevadagirlamber, 07-2012

An interesting postcard she got me in Egypt. She noted that a boat like this is next to the Great Pyramid of Giza. The card says that it’s a “solar boat,” which Wikipedia says is ”... a ritual vessel to carry the resurrected king with the sun god Ra across the heavens.” The shape reminds me of the papyrus Ra boats that Thor Heyerdahl built to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 1969 & 1970. The Ra boats were based on Egyptian models and drawings so the resemblance isn’t surprising ;)

Thanks Amber! :)6 months ago

TGFrom skyPRINCE, 07-03-12

From the back of the card:

Playa Cardon, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela

Another double- two postcards from 43ers in one day! This one has kind of an interesting history because I received it nearly four months after it was sent. That’s even worse than the Italian postal service! ;)

I think that skyPRINCE & I both thought that it was lost forever, so I was pretty surprised to see it turn up.

Thanks for the card, E! :)7 months ago

TGFrom TechKat, 07-03-12

A very unusually-shaped novelty postcard. The back of the card was stamped with the message, “USPS requires an envelope when mailing this product.” Since the card is also an unusual size, she made her own envelope out of a piece of plain paper.

Thanks Kat :) 7 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 06-30-12

My first time receiving two postcards from the same person in one day!

I read what you said about why you picked this one, C, but I don’t believe it. I’m sure that it really caught your attention because of the phrase “Triple Screw” on the front! :D

Thanks for the card :) 7 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 06-30-12

Villach is a small city (population about 60K) in the south of Austria, near the border with Italy & Slovenia. It is sited on the river Drava, which is visible in several of the photos. The one in the top row that shows the city in the bend of the river (second from the right) reminds me of Berne in Switzerland, which I visited in 2003.

Thanks for the beautiful card, C! :)7 months ago

TGFrom nevadagirlamber, 06-22-12

Two cards received in two days! Amber sent me this beautiful card of San Pietro, a church in Rome that was built over 1500 years ago. Very cool architecture :)

Thanks, Amber! 7 months ago

TGFrom Takergirl, 06-21-12

From the back of the card (would you believe that even after checking several postcard collecting sites I couldn’t find a term for the text on the back of a postcard?!):

Each year, hundreds of thousands of vacationers flock to Ocean City, on the southern tip of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In 1933, a severe storm formed the prime real estate now referred to as the inlet, featuring 10 miles of the best white-sand beaches on the East Coast. Proudly honored as an All-American City in 2001, Ocean City has long been called “The East Coast’s Number One Family Resort.”

Thanks Takergirl :) Even with all of my traveling I’ve never been to the East Coast, but I’ll get there eventually! 7 months ago

TGFrom catherine's daughter, 06-09-12

This one is an actual vintage card, not just a recent print of an old card! According to Wikipedia the hotel was built in 1916 and most of it was demolished in 1967 (after Lakeshore Drive cut off its access to the beach and caused a reduction in its popularity).

Cool card, K- thanks! :)9 months ago

TGFrom TechKat, 06-08-12

I received this one from TK just a couple days after the Great Lakes card. Cool waterfall! I’ve hiked one trail in Spearfish Canyon but I’ve never been to these falls. I guess it’s one for the “next time” list ;)

Thanks again Kat :)9 months ago

TGFrom TechKat via buffalosnowangel, 06-06-12

This one was actually sent to me by TechKat, but she got the card from buffalosnowangel in a postcard swap they did. I really liked this card because I used to live just 10-12 miles/ < 20 km from the southern tip of Lake Michigan. I’ve been in the lake or at least on the shoreline of all 4 of the Great Lakes that were featured on this tour.

Thanks for the card, ladies! :)9 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 06-01-12

A peaceful street scene in Ibiza, Spain. With a message that was enough to counteract the somnolent scene ;)

Wish that I was there to lotion you up for that sunbathing session! Or any other time :D

Thanks, C, and enjoy tomorrow’s trip! :)9 months ago

TGFrom Smiling to myself today..., 05-2012

Oops, looks like I forgot to write down the day I received this one! :P And it’s not really a postcard, but I’m still counting it for this goal ;)

Fuji’s a favorite of mine- it’s so symetrical and it just seems to be an archetype for “mountain.” I hope to be able to see it in person someday.

Thanks for the card, T! :)10 months ago

TGFrom nevadagirlamber, 05-10-12

A card with a recipe- yum! I have to admit, though, that I wouldn’t recognize a huckleberry plant if I saw one. I always thought that they only grew in the Northwest and the northern Rockies but I read that they do grow in Colorado- I’d better brush up on identifying them so I can try this out!

Thanks, Amber :)10 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 05-07-11

A very colorful card from Barcelona! It looks like a cool place and I’m glad you had a good time, C. Thanks for the card :)

My best friend is currently in Spain for five weeks, but I think he’s based around Madrid. I’m not sure if he’s making it out to the coast.11 months ago

TGFrom Smiling to myself today..., 04-12-12

Beer! :) A card showing some of the breweries on Water Street in downtown Milwaukee. Hey Julie, maybe the next time I’m in your area we could check one (or more!) of these out.

Thanks for the postcard, T! :)

(And sorry that I’ve gotten so far behind on posting again :/ ). 11 months ago

TGFrom A_butterfly_kiss, 04-11-12

A card that she sent me from a visit to Monaco. Wow, I’d love to have one of those boats, but I’d need to win the lottery to be able to afford to run it!

Thanks for the card, A :)11 months ago

TGFrom nevadagirlamber, 04-04-12

Two 43er postcards in one day! This very cool card is from Guatamala. According to the tag it’s completely handcrafted using bark paper, natural pigments, and cotton fabric. The image is called “La Calavera Catrina” (The Elegant Skull) and is a famous etching created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada in 1910. You can read more about it here.

Thanks so much, Amber! This one’s going on top of my good bookcase, not the fridge! 12 months ago

TGFrom littlesoul, 04-04-12

A photo of a very unusual building called the Casa Milà in Barcelona, Spain. The building is over 100 years old but certainly looks much more modern to me.

Thanks C! And do you find something sexually-related on every trip?! I’m jealous! ;)12 months ago

TGFrom Smiling to myself today..., 03-30-12

Another place I’ve never been, but this looks just like my house! ;) This is the north face of the White House in Washington, DC. Did you know that the north side has a round portico and the south side has a square one? I didn’t!

I’d love to go to DC, especially to see the Smithsonian. I met a couple while I was at the caving convention last year who live nearby who said that I could stay with them if I ever come out that way. It’s still on the “someday” list, though.

Thanks for the postcard, T! 12 months ago

TGFrom GorgeousGoddess, 03-23-12

A beautiful California shot that she took herself! She sent it in a very cool postcard frame that I’ve never seen before (which looks great but unfortunately makes it very difficult to get a photo of ;) ).

Thanks for the card, GG! :)12 months ago

TGFrom AaroninsouthMN, 03-16-12

A nice card showing a montage of some of the wildlife in South Dakota. Although you always hear about Yellowstone being such a great wildlife park, I think that the Black Hills area of South Dakota is a close runner-up.

Thanks to Aaron, but unfortunately he has closed his account :(12 months ago
