The pattern is your “recipe” for making clothing. It tells you what size will fit and how to make alterations to the pattern to fit you better. It tells you what kinds of fabrics to choose and how much of it to buy. It will list all thread, elastic and buttons that you will need and how to select them.
And it tells you how to cut and sew every detail needed to make your garment. There will be an instruction sheet with drawings and explanations for every step and some information is written on the pattern pieces themselves.
Walmart and JoAnn sell fabric and patterns. Some pattern companies are on the Internet. Simplicity, Butterick, McCall’s and Vogue are the big four. There are many more, some specialize in raincoats, western wear, dance costumes or antique designs.
Measure yourself with a tape measure around the fullest part of your chest and hips and the narrowest part of your waist. Know your height and any common fitting problems you have in ready-to-wear such as sleeves that are too long or a waistband that is loose in the size that fits your hips. There are simple alterations a beginner can make that will produce clothes which fit better than expensive ready to wear.
Look for online discussion forums where you can talk about your progress with other sewers who can share your experiences and enthusiasm. Good luck!!
