Using the sequences on the official rubik’s page but written in letter notation (explained here) I managed to solve my first cube ever! This page is also handy.

Making all the crosses first and then sorting out corners is easier than the layers method. Layers might be more important for speed (some people solve scrambled cubes in twenty seconds!) but this way made more sense to me personally.
