Giving up on my master cat burglar dreams. Good fuel for the imagination but I’m finding I don’t have the desire to buy better tools or really practice this much.

... girls dig it.
Seriously though, why is this appealing? Maybe because it is border line naughty? Nah, mostly it is because it is just a fun a little mechanical puzzle and about finding security weaknesses. Lock maker vs Rew. Ding ding. It’s on!
For whatever reason I bumped into some YouTube vids on this very thing the other day and it sparked interest. Sport lock picking is catching on. There are a couple clubs in the states and a few famous orgs in Europe.
Last night I grabbed the master lock off our garage storage using my uber efficient lock opening tool: a key. Brining that new “puzzle” upstairs I also covertly grabbed a bobby pin (covertly – aka “asked my gal if I could have one”) I also stripped a uni-ball pen of its pocket clip and grabbed a pair of pliers for shaping of those tools. With all that in hand I sat down for a little fun.
I got a feel for picking. I can push pins down, apply tension, and though by no means a measure of skill at all, I used strong tensions and raked that little master lock open. Again, not skilled, but I did it, and it was kind of cool.
I’m craving more variety of locks and some real tools. (My little uni-ball tension wrench is bent and pretty non-functional at this point. My cat like dexterity and finesse mangled it. Rawr.)

Fact Check
- Lock picking for fun should be legal in most states, but you should know your state laws before you do any of this. Google it. In most states it is not illegal to own/make “burglarious tools” (lock picks).
- It’s not illegal to open locks that belong to you for fun, or even locks owned by others if they ask you to.
- It is illegal to open locks not belonging to you, without permission, especially if you have criminal intent.
- Knocking on doors or using your keys usually gains you access to things a lot faster then lock picking.
- Alas. No, girls don’t think it is all that impressive. But sometimes they do come with bobby-pins, which can be used for such efforts. Bonus!
Ugh, there’s a reason why pros don’t use bobby pins and screw drivers…but I aaaaalmost got the back door lock. I’ll need to build or buy better tools some time soon though…
