Though Anjali will swear she did it all, I drove for at least five hours out of an eleven or twelve hour trip.
Yuck. I felt dizzy and nauseous for DAYS afterward because of the lack of sleep.

The longest haul for me was moving from Louisiana to Kansas City. I left at around 9 PM, and drove for exactly 24 hours with one 15 minute cat nap in Memphis.
Apparently, the U-Haul refused to go over 45 miles per hour and I was driving a small-size pickup. Fun times, I tell ya.

I drove for probably 8 hours during the warm summer night, through deserted highways in Arizona, where you could hear the coyotes, meet so few cars you thought you were on Mars, and gasp at the star-flooded sky high above.
To stay awake I cycled between chewing gum, listening to audio books, opening the driver’s window to feel the chilly airflow on my face, or all the above at once.
At 5am we reached Sedona, AZ and I collapsed to sleep. My friends told me, “You drove like a hero” :-)
I drove this weekend from Springfield back to Kansas City… Although not all night, I drove from 11 to 1:30… It was interesting because after I left Springfield, I drove for 59 miles before I passed a single car. And then I hooked up with 96.5 The Buzz’s techno show and was able to listen to some interesting music all the way back.
Interesting though, I discovered that through some freak of nature my registration has been expired since July of 2005, I was shocked. It will cost a pretty penny!
I remember one time being so tired that I realized I couldn’t make it anymore without a quick cat nap. I felt myself nodding off way too many times. It really decreases your response time on the road. So I decided to pull off at a little rest stop. Probably 10 minutes later I woke up out of a dead sleep and stomped on the brakes and grabbed onto the steering wheel, seeing grass ahead of me. Then I realized that I had pulled off to sleep at the rest stop. Needless to say I was wide awake and good for another few hundred miles. Fun times.
