“The Plains Indians had – and I hope still have – a traditional method of recording and keeping their memories called the winter count. Each winter an individual would paint on a large buffalo skin something symbolizing what he considered the most striking event of the year. As the years accumulated, the winter counts grew. Years were named on the basis of these winter counts – ‘the year of many buffalo’ or ‘the year of little water,’ for instance. But a person from the Great Plains could also remember his own life events by looking at his winter count, through chronological and categorical cuing.”

I’m pretty sure I won’t use a buffalo skin, but a special blank book would do the trick.

I also want to go back in time and make winter counts for as many years as possible.
