hopenaI participated in one of these goals, four years ago

Hence the Gremlin in my avatar section.

I have Harry Potter on right now, and thought that Moaning Myrtle felt appropriate this year. ;) If I had anywhere to go “in real life” I’d probably dress up as Myrtle, if I could get my hands on a uniform and the right glasses. 2 years ago

New IsabellaMore on jack-o'-lanterns, mangelwurzels, and Punkie Night (from the learn-something-new-every-day department):

Here’s a picture of a mangelwurzel, from this interesting blog entry which talks about “Punkie Night,” a celebration in Somerset, England, on the last Thursday night in October, which sounds suspiciously like Halloween in some ways. Luckily for modern-day Halloween celebrations around here, pumpkins seem a lot easier to carve into jack-o’-lanterns than root vegetables.
.
I also found another interesting blog entry on the origin of the mangelwurzel, which is a type of field beet developed in the 18th century in order to feed cattle. 3 years ago

New IsabellaThe original Jack-o'-lantern!

According to Wikipedia, jack-o’-lanterns were originally made with other types of vegetables, including turnips, mangelwurzels, or swedes. (I’m still not clear on what a mangelwurzel is.) And jack-o’-lanterns were originally named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs. This photo from wikipedia is a traditional Irish turnip Jack-o’-lantern from the early 20th century, photographed at the Museum of Country Life in Ireland. 3 years ago

TajLVPardon the pun

The math symbol sorta looks like a stylized T, an unfinished A, and a dyslexic J crammed together. Couldn’t resist. It really sums up my mood this week. 3 years ago

Feeling HopefulPumpkin and Black Cat

I’m using the same Halloween avatar I’ve used the last couple of years. It has my two favorite Halloween images: a black cat and a pumpkin.

Themed avatar weeks are fun! 3 years ago

LogophileGot started a little early

since I’m going out of town next week & I don’t know whether I’ll make it to 43T while I’m gone.

I also had this mummy pic. I had a hard time deciding between the two, but I finally opted for the still from Blood Tea and Red String. 3 years ago

beelikethebugDone! (Albeit a little early).

Did this one a little early, as I will be on va-kay this week, and I’m not sure how much time I will be able to spend online! 3 years ago

SlayneBI'm keeping my Halloween Fairy up

for the rest of the month, as this is my favorite holiday, so I’m marking this goal as done. 3 years ago
