Lyca mending leather satchels
Half way through my second ever pair of mittens, for the boyfriend – body of the first mitt nearly done! All made from recycled wool :-)
How I did it: I was inspired by a photo I saw of a pair of Norweigan mittens from "The Knitter's Almanac" by Elizabeth Zimmermann.
I didn't have the book, so I made my own pattern for these using a square grid in microsoft paint - simple increases every two rounds for the thumb shaping, and matching mirrored decreases for the tops. The best bit was seeing the fairisle develop in the round as I knit.
There's a link to my (new and improved!) knitting pattern below, free to anyone who wants to use it - although please mention where you got it, so other people can use it! The thumb hole is knitted in scrap yarn (indicated by grey), picking up the stitches and removing the scrap yarn after finishing the body of the mitts.

Lessons & tips: This is a pretty basic pattern (great for beginners like me) which can be adapted really easily to suit your own purposes.
Resources: www.knittinghelp.com helped me a lot, especially deciding on what increases and decreases to use.

My sister and I will be learning how to knit together and hopefully, after much practice, we will have mastered the art of knitting. Besides, two brains are better than one!
Since the Winter season has begun, I’d really like to knit matching mittens for my best friend and I. I’d love for my pair to have fur attached (faux fur, of course).
Finished knitting the right mitten and it came out a little better than the left one. I didn’t expect to get done knitting them so quickly because it took me forever to knit socks! I’m going to start on another pair of mittens and I’ll try to get them done before Christmas, so I could give them as a present to someone!
I finished one mitten quicker than I thought I would. It didn’t come out that great though, since it’s my first time knitting mittens. It looks more like a horrible sock puppet (doesn’t even compare to these cool ones)...
I started knitting the first mitten and so far I finished the wrist part and now I’m working on the hand area. Knitting during the winter (well close to it too) is much more fun than knitting during any other season…
yay! last night i went to a knitting class to make mittens. so far i have the cuff and the thumb ‘gusset’. they teach you weird words like that too… anywho. i’m almost done. and its very calming to me
I love mittens. Other people love mittens! I want to make mittens for other people. Yippee!
I’ve know made 1 scarf, 6 hats and I just started my first pair of mittens – Going to a great yarn store was the biggest help – Sunday I went there for an hour to knit so when I had questions, I could get help :) I have the wrist and up to the thumb of one done!!
