You know, I’m not really sure why I never learned to do this. It seems simple enough, but I just never got around to it. I’m pretty handy, so I have decided to do it this weekend on both cars.
How to learn to change the oil in my car
How I did it: Looked it up in a mechanic's manual I picked up in a used book store. After changing the oil and filter, I realized I liked working on cars. Since then, I have changed the transmission fluid, spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor, air filter and will do a radiator flush this weekend.
I cannot even begin to estimate how much money I have saved by doing all of this work myself. Most importantly, I feel great that I am no longer afraid that a weird noise in the engine will translate to a mechanic fleecing me for hundreds of dollars because I don't know any better.
Lessons & tips: This is SO easy! Check on the web for instructions. There are a lot of excellent videos on YouTube, and you just might find a step-by-step guide for your car.
