 "The feeling of entering a complete other world, a new culture was amazing. Something I will never forget for the rest of my life."
How I did it: Late 2007 I filled in an form of an organization called Edukans. Edukans stands up for children in Third World countries, they mainly focus on education. As I was doing an education to become a primary school teacher (still doing) I decided to sign up to a 14 day-journey to teach in Malawi. Finally, in October 2008 we went there, with a group of 60 students. It was an amazing experience, visiting a country, not as a tourist, but actually teaching in a whole other world and culture.. Lessons & tips: Don't hesitate, if you can afford it, have the time, just grab the chance!! |

Met so many amazing people...learned about an incredible yet radically different culture...better shaped my own goals and ideals...had the best time of my life. I’ve been here a month now – time really flies. And it’s kind of frustrating to realise that I haven’t found a job I really like yet, or made some great friends yet and really enjoyed myself.
But I really feel like I understand how things work, how it ticks, and the complex issues that underpin everyday life. I certainly don’t think I am having a regular tourist experience. I just hope that I push this further and become happy here.

I went to Africa when I was in the Navy in 1975. But things have changed quite a bit. Most cases for the worse and I’d like to see things more clearly.

My parents are both from Africa and although I have done the holiday thing, I haven’t actually gone there and really experienced where they are from. I am really planning to in the next couple of weeks if I can get a move on with my visa etc. but I need to get out there.
I guess the reason why I don’t consider this done is because I need to make sure that when I get out there I really experience Africa and don’t just lounge on the beach. I want to travel and work and I am so determined to do both – I just hope I come back with renewed sense of who I am and where I came from. You know what inspired me to do this? Obama. His first book. Strange, I know, but I’m so excited to be going.

It’s always been my dream to visit Africa. The world has changed a lot since I first desired to do this, but I know I will go there with my son someday in the near future (within a few years).

I am going to Tanzania in June for 6 weeks to do volunteer work. I will probably be working in an orphanage. I am so excited!!
