In high school I ran a 4:21 as my best mile. But now I’m 32 years old. I’m sure I’ll meet my goal of beating 6 minutes, but this one might be out of range for a geezer like me.
Sort of like how Lance Armstrong will never win another Tour de France, or Michael Jordan will never play in the NBA again. It’s not that they are lazy or out of shape or unmotivated. Some things just get tough after a while.
The first thing to slip away is Speed. Still, I’m gonna try for this one. It’s so much sweeter to achieve the impossible.

I was always stuck in the 5:20s through junior year, and then senior year I got a ton better, but I still kept coming up short. A guy dropped out of the mile in our last race (regionals), and so I got one more chance to do it. I did the first three laps a little too slow (3:48ish), but I had a strong kick the last lap and just got in there at 4:59.8. It was a great way to finish off my HS running career.

All I’m looking for here is a 4:59 mile…
Nothing that amazing…
It’s possible, just need a bit more conditioning.
