I decided to teach myself how to make buttercream icing, and looked at all sorts of techniques to make it look pretty on a cake. I then decided to try it for myself on a batch of cupcakes.
The cupcakes came out looking pretty okay for a first try, but I discovered I can’t eat buttercream. :( I don’t like the taste and it just upsets my stomach.
Luckily, my boyfriend had no problem with eating most of my cupcakes. As for me, well, there’s always fondant…

My first step
The other day I stopped in Michaels and noticed that their cake decorating classes are half off during December and January. I signed up and will be taking the first course starting Jan. 5th. I’m really excited, as cake decorating is something that I’ve toyed with for a while now. It’s a month long class, with four 2 hour classes once a week. The first course covers the basics of decorating, like frosting and adding borders and simple flowers.
I’m definitely going to take the three other courses that they offer there, I really want to learn how to use fondant and gum paste. I tried making my own fondant the other day, from scratch. It turned out okay, I made lilies and roses to put on my friends birthday cake. For a first try I think I did pretty well, but there was obviously room for improvement. xD

Check out your local craft store (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.) for classing on cake decorating. I did it at Hobby Lobby and took 2 Wilton method classes. It was fun!
