I did it 13 years ago, and have no regrets. I sold my house, bought a piece of wood, built a couple of cabins (a long complicated story, one would have been enough for me) and have turned into a hermit. I love nothing better than pottering around my place, and relaxing with my cat (don’t do it enough), but also enjoy having an occasional visitor, but hate going anywhere, which, I suppose, makes me a hermit. I do like to communicate (gemini), and spend some time on the internet, so I am a sociable hermit. I was 37 when I did it, did not have much money (though land was a little cheaper then), am only a slip of a thing, and have no training in building or much of anything, so it can be done. All you need is the determination. It was hard work at times, but I have no regrets and would do it again. Go for it! Have a look at my website to see what I have done

Just a little cabin up in the woods. grow my own food. keep time by the sun and stars.
