...is a great spontaneous lets-blow-off-work-for-pretzels sort of thing for us who live right below the PA border. You can just zip due North, toward the town “Intercourse” (what were they thinking?) and soon enough, you’ll see them everywhere, with wide-eyed children and tight lipped glares. They do have funny little road stands where you can buy stuff, like pretzels! And if you’re lucky, you’ll see a herd of Amish rollarblading down the road to market.

Try to keep in mind that the Amish do not like to be gawked at as though they are on display. While it’s natural for people to be curious about such a different culture within our own country, please remember that these are their daily lives and they just want to go about their business and be left alone. For the most part, they are very private, that’s why they choose such a “secluded” life.

Personally, I’ve not only been to Amish markets and villages but also in an Amish home but this is only because my childhood friend’s grandparents owned a farm surrounded by Amish culture in central PA. One summer I stayed with my friend at her grandparents farm where they would often trade goods with the Amish. But it’s not like you can just walk into their lives as though they are some tourist attraction. The best place to meet them without interfering in their lives is at a Farmer’s/Amish Market.

Hot Humid and Hazy, but the people were great. We stayed with a Mennonite family. It was a great experience.

Visit them only? We went and lived among them! Christian County, Kentucky.  — 1 year ago

I’ve never actually been inside of one of their homes, but there are many amish people living in the community where we live. We often see them riding in their horse and buggies along the side of the road, and they are always very pleasant.

We bought a house from the Amish. All the moderninities have been removed, and so we have to put some money into updating the house, but at last, we are working towards many of the goals I have: living simply, living on land that I feel connected to in a spiritual sense, and living among the Amish. We may not share the same view of the divine, but we certainly share an understanding of the need for a better way to live in this current cultural climate.

I have no doubt that the recent events will make visiting the Amish in the future very difficult.

I’d like to do this with my kids over the summer. Is Lancaster, PA a good place to visit? Any advice on what to do (or not do) while there?

Are there any good places to camp close by?
