...is a great spontaneous lets-blow-off-work-for-pretzels sort of thing for us who live right below the PA border. You can just zip due North, toward the town “Intercourse” (what were they thinking?) and soon enough, you’ll see them everywhere, with wide-eyed children and tight lipped glares. They do have funny little road stands where you can buy stuff, like pretzels! And if you’re lucky, you’ll see a herd of Amish rollarblading down the road to market. 4 years ago
Hot Humid and Hazy, but the people were great. We stayed with a Mennonite family. It was a great experience. 5 years ago
Herndon, off of 41A. Off the beaten path, you might say.

I’ve never actually been inside of one of their homes, but there are many amish people living in the community where we live. We often see them riding in their horse and buggies along the side of the road, and they are always very pleasant. 5 years ago
We bought a house from the Amish. All the moderninities have been removed, and so we have to put some money into updating the house, but at last, we are working towards many of the goals I have: living simply, living on land that I feel connected to in a spiritual sense, and living among the Amish. We may not share the same view of the divine, but we certainly share an understanding of the need for a better way to live in this current cultural climate.

I’d like to do this with my kids over the summer. Is Lancaster, PA a good place to visit? Any advice on what to do (or not do) while there?
Are there any good places to camp close by? 5 years ago
I’ve always been fascinated by the Amish. I like that they live their lives in community and that they share religious convictions (even though I don’t have those convictions myself). 5 years ago
I love the amish lifestyles! I would love to visit the amish in PA! I would love to live with them for a week and actually do WORK! I would love to learn how to cook their foodies and wear their plain but classic clothes!! The original banana republic!! ;o) hehehe!! 5 years ago
They gave me my very own sunbonnet. They also make this delicious dish called knieffel. Basically, it is little oval shaped flat pieces of dough (about the size of a nickle) steamed for about 10 minutes, then add a little butter, brown slightly. Usually served with tender roast beef and gravy. Yeah, I know, my arteries clog just thinking of it! Amish folks also make really delicious homemade noodles. I learned how to make bread from an Amish. They believe in wholesome filling meals. They also work their arse off gardening and with daily chores. I’ve quilted with the Amish. They are a very lovely group of people if you do not gawk, stare or make a huge fuss over how they are different. They treasure their privacy and are not pleased when disrespectful tourist shove a camera in their face. 6 years ago
