So far I’ve read:
Washington (Burns and Dunn)
Adams (McCullough)
Jefferson (R.B. Bernstein)
Madison (Rutland)
Monroe (Hart)
JQA (Nagel)
Jackson (Davis)
Van Buren (Widmer)
I know William Henry Harrison was only President for a little while, but I can’t seem to find a biography on him. Any help?

I don’t know if I want to read a book on every president but probably the most important one’s.
Gary Wills does a very good job separating Madison the founding father and Madison the president. Madison was one of the most influential and important members of the founding fathers and is arguably as important as anyone in the creation of our Constitution. However, his years in the legislature and as a cabinet member, Madison became one of the most partisan Republicans and his presidency is considered a failure due to partisan bickering and inaction. Also, Madison and the Republicans love of France helped bias them and lead to the war with England in 1812.
So far, though early, Madison seems like someone who never should’ve been president. Great legislator, politician, and thinker but very poor leadership and social skills.
I’m almost finished with “George Washington, The Indipsensable Man” (except they spell that right on the book cover), and it was pretty good. It’s a condensed version of a four volume work – you can tell that the author is skimming over a good bit of information, but it’s very readable and through, dispite not being four books(!). It’s by James Thomas Flexner.
So, Adams is next. I think I’ll see if they have a biography of him at the library – I’m not sure I like him enough to pay for his biography.
I’m working on this goal – right now I’m reading Theodore Rex, about Teddy Roosevelt. I’ve already read biographies of LBJ and Andrew Jackson. I’ve noticed that it’s hard to find readable, well-written biographies of presidents. The one on Andrew Jackson was very good, but I snored through “Big Daddy from the Pedernales” (if I’m remembering the name of the LBJ biography correctly).
I was going to read the biographies in order, so that I would understand how each administration builds off of the previous administration. But I can’t find a good biography of Washington. Does anyone have a suggestion?
