New DVDs weren’t as good as the previous :-(
On Acoustic vol I and Modern Rock vol I, they both had half the tunes with non-standard tunings, some REALLY non-standard. One was in Drop-D which isn’t too bad, but I’m looking for songs that I can know by heart and play on a moment’s notice, and too many of these did NOT qualify.
Did learn I Will Buy You a New Life, and working on Aqualung from Classic Rock Vol 1. Also learned a couple from my Songbook
I’ve created a spreadsheet to track my progress, and am using the “Songbook” feature of Chordie to track the songs I know and/or am learning. Most of them are pretty good versions online, and they have a nice feature that allows easy transposition.
The book I’m using at the moment is The Complete Guitar Player Songbook (Omnibus Edition). I love this book! It must have 50 or more songs that I want to know. Currently working on Nights in White Satin, America(Simon and Garfunkel), and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Ordered a new Acoustic-Electric guitar- a Rogue Dreadnought from Musician’s friend. A real bargain and nice reviews. Also ordered a new practice amp, the Behringer Vintager GM110 Combo Amp, which looks like it might just fit the bill. They should arrive tomorrow, and should help encourage me to keep working on this goal. Just need a nice set of headphones to go with them.
Ordered 2 new teaching DVDs. I’m very happy with the SongXpress titles so far, and am getting the Modern Rock volume I.
- I Will Buy You A New Life (Everclear)
- Iris (Goo Goo Dolls)
- Shine (Collective Soul)
- You (Candlebox)
Also ordered Acoustic Classics Vol I (already have vol 2)
- 4 + 20 (Crosby, Stills, and Nash)
- Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell)
- Come Monday (Jimmy Buffett)
- Vincent (Don McLean)
No excuse not to start learning some new kick-*ss songs!

About 20 songs I can play by heart, pretty well. Found a great guitar book I’ve had for years just full of stuff I’d like to play. I’m putting the other 20 or so books, and piles of sheet music to the side. Simplify. Start with the one book, and chew my way through it, memorizing at least one song a week.
This week is Simon and Garfunkel- Sounds of Silence / America

After my Chinese calss in 5 minutes, I will take stock and document the songs I know. At least it will give me a starting place.

I need to make a mark in the sand, and determine how many I know and how many I need to learn.
For these 100 songs, these will be songs that I can play FROM MEMORY, on demand. Sure I can play lots of songs marginally well from sheet music or fake books, but I want to do better.
I purchased several Song Xpress DVDs which each have about 4-5 songs that you learn, following the guidance on the screen. I’m very happy with the first one, Classic Acoustic Vol II. I’ve learned four of these songs, and I love the way they sound.
1. House at Pooh Corner
2. American Pie
3. More than Words
4. Country Roads.
In the next week, I’m going to go through my song inventory, and see how many songs I can say I ‘know’ and fill out my list. I’ll be filling a notebook with chords/TAB of the songs as I practice/reminder.

Ive already got 45 songs in my list, and a couple others that i can remember how to play, but i want to get 100 songs in the “guitar” folder on my computer. Should be good. I had a prime oppourtunity to charm the girl i like (see my list goal #1) as there was a party at some guy in a band’s house. he had guitars all around the place, but stupid me got drunk instead. The lesson… well, havent figured that one out yet… let me know if you do. :)
