How I did it: I was able to go through the Salvation Army and an International Youth Forum they were hosting in Captown, South Africa in 1997. While there, we also flew up to Johannesberg where we say some of the world's largest poverty. It was an amazing experience. Lessons & tips: Be open to the opportunities that come up. I never saw this coming and was unsure about doing this, but I just went. I need to remember to live more by the adventurer spirit that I once did in college. |

How I did it: I finally went travelling on my own. Of course, I met up with other people and made new friends once I'd arrived in St. Lucia - friends for life, I hope. I booked in January, spent the next seven months saving up, and off I went! I went on a photography project. I took 2,500 photos of animals and the community. Trip with the social work department

In May 2009, the social work department at LCU is planning a trip to South Africa. I really want to go. I feel in some ways it might be my last opportunity to travel overseas for a very long time. I will have just graduated by that time and I think that serving people in South Africa would be a great way to celebrate my accomplishments in school, as well as, learn something new about myself as a social worker in a foreign context. I really hope that I will be able to go. Seeing other cultures is such a joy to me. I love to see the diversity that God created. I want to explore that more and more.

Embassy

I have now contacted the South African Embassy in Finland and they replied my first email. I’m waiting for a reply on my second email now.
I need to apply for a visa, I have the form now (thanks to Mr. Bam from the Embassy – the site that has the form files hasn’t been working in days, or at least I can’t get it to open.)
I need to figure out if I also need to apply for a Temporary residence permit, that’s what I’m waiting an answer for.

That’s what I need to decide. Trust me, it won’t be the easiest of decisions out there. :s

Hey all, I should know since I live here! Born and raised in Johannesburg – there’s no other place I’d choose to live out my life! It is the most diverse, amazing place in the world. (not that i’m biased or anything ;) You better visit!
