tenthrune is a little bit all alone.
When I was in France I taught held English conversation classes once a week for about an hour. It was so little that I’m not really counting it towards my goal, but it was a good experience.
How I did it: This was more than a decade ago, so forgive me if some of the info is dated: I had a friend who was teaching in Kaohsiung, Taiwan who said he could probably get me some work. I immediately decided to go, and when I got there, I found tons of work at small, privately-owned language schools. I did not have a college degree, which I believe is now preferred for most esl teachers...not sure though. Read how I did it…

I’m adding this even though I’ve already completed it. Amazing experience hope to some day do it again.
I am a current college graduate and teaching is something that I never thought I’d want to pursue. Teaching English in a foreign country sounds like the best idea, plus I’m helping people who want to learn.
One of my professors this summer was on the board for the JET program in Japan. I’m so excited! He is so nice and he would be the perfect reference if I decided to to the JET program. We meet on Monday to talk of strategy. So awesome!
I plan on teaching in Japan from April 2009- April 2010 possibly longer if I like it a lot. I’m also planning on teaching in China from August 2010 to June 2012 (Yes I planned that far ahead already.) The grad-school I’m hoping to attend (before the masters/ doctorate in Geography in Japan) is Prescott College. It’s a distance learning school so I can live wherever I want as long as I can get back twice a year for seminars.
I know that I love traveling. I’ll graduate December 07 with a BA in Instrumental Music Education. I will teach in my major, but…maybe I should explore some more before settling down?
I’ve read success stories of how life changing teaching abroad can be. I don’t know if I’ll ever get enough guts to do it.
I guess I have some more time to decide!
