After spending most of my life being the pretty but fat girl I am ready to do something serious about losing a significant amount of weight. Over the years I have tried all kinds of diets and lost weight only to gain it back. I got serious about exercise one year and lost weight, but quickly resumed my old habits and gained that back too.
A co-worker had gastric bypass surgery in October and she looks great. I watched her struggle a little in the beginning with the emotional part of not using food for comfort, but she seems to have gotten a grip on it and her self esteem is through the roof. I am choosing lap band over gastric because from what I have read it is less evasive and a quicker recovery.
I talked to my doctor last week and she gave me her full support and is starting the process. I will attend an mandatory information seminar next Monday and see the actual doctor a 30 days after that. I know there are a series of things that must be done before approval by my insurance company, but I feel if it is meant to be, it will happen, so I have no worries. I am actually feeling very excited as the thought that I could finally feel comfortable in my own skin and better overall physically with this surgery.
My kids and friends are 100% behind me. My husband disagrees saying I just need to exercise. If it was that easy for me at this weight, I would, but I am carrying over 100 extra pounds and I feel like I need that extra push. And I realize, I have to do this for myself.
I will continue to post as the appointments are made and completed. Wish me luck!

How to get a gastric lap band"So far, so good"
How I did it: I have begun the process for getting to a healthy weight. I will keep you updated on my progress. The process began with going to a seminar about both lap band and gastric bypass. I chose gastric bypass because it is less invasive. I then had to go through 6 month doctor supervised diet, but it was okay because my doctor supported me. Then I went to see the surgeon and he did his physical. Each insurance has different requirements so you will have to check iwth yours to see what they want. Once my 6 months was up, they submitted the paperwork and I was approved and here I am. Resources: For general information regrading LapBanding go to www.lapbandtalk.com |

More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: I decided at the beginning of this year that I wanted this surgery for certain. I then began researching my options online, knowing that I was not willing to jump through insurance hoops to get the surgery this year. I ultimately chose a company that facilitates the surgery in Mexico. I thoroughly researched the company, the doctor, the hospital, etc and decided it was right for me. I had my surgery 2 weeks&nb… Read how I did it…

I don’t need it Im not that big. I don’t eat much and now Im currently fasting so this wouldn’t help me much. Plus I can’t really find a doctor who would do this on me with my BMI.
I really am thinking about getting the lap band surgery. I’ve tried all the diets. I have asthma and Diabetes which is really dragging me down. I now have a 9 year old daughter at age 50 and I really want to be in better shape for her. I don’t have any energy and I’m ready to do something about it. My insurance will cover 90% of the cost.
I would like to know what happens after the surgery. I’ve heard that you stay sick most of the time. What is a fill. I want to get info from someone who has the surgery and can tell me first hand what to expect.
I’m ready to change my life for myself.
I have been so indecisive about having the lap band surgery … I have been thinking about it since Oct 2007. I went to the free informative seminar and found out more info about the whole procedure. I really need this but am soooo scared of whole thing. I am sooo scared about the pain and the whole not being able to eat anything and the internal (body) feelings you get when you eat certain things. I just dont know if i would be able to handle it. BUT all i hear are goods things … i dont think i have ever heard someone say they would have done things differently based on their experience …. ????
I was also kinda curious about the incisions and how big they are? how many? do they become OBVIOUS scars? I also saw on a guys blog that infections are normal??? that really scares me … what kind of infections I would really appreciate some insight on whether i should even be worried about these things ??? HELP !!
I am really looking forward to this! My mind is made up and I only have to get my debt paid off to pay for this surgery.
I had my surgery 2 years ago and things are still going great! I have yet to put on any weight and have gradually lost weight for 2 years now. I am down to 155 and have never been happier. I do have acid reflux and heartburn now and I had never had that before but all and all things have been wonderful.
Wow, and what a ride it’s been. It’s still “settling” and I’ve only had it in for about 40 days so there’s not much to show, but I have lost weight! I anticipate once it’s totally healed to lose about 2 pounds per week and 100 pounds to my anniversary.
This has really been worth it so far even though my ride hasn’t been the most normal. I’ll be happy to help anyone looking to do this. You can keep track of my adventure at www.christopherkamler.com
Good luck to everyone in your own personal journeys!!

HAD MY LAP BAND JANUARY 19TH AND AM SO GLAD I DID. I HAVE LOST 60 LBS SO FAR. HAS BEEN A SLOW AND STEADY AND WONDERFULLY EASY JOURNEY AND I CAN’T RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH TO ANYONE. I NO LONGER TAKE INSULIN (WAS TAKING 4 SHOTS DAILY, NO STOMACH MEDICINE AND AM HAVING MY BLOOD PRESSURE MED REDUCED CAUSE IT IS NOW TOO STRONG.) WEARING CLOTHES IS FUN NOW AND I HAVE MORE ENERGY THAT EVER BEFORE. I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF FILLS TO DATE AND THAT IS EASY, EASY, AND NO PAIN INVOLVED. YAHOO TO ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS TAKING THE LEAP.
i had lap band sugery done 3 weeks ago and it was the best decision i have made in my life im only 17 and being overwieght at this age can be hard with people looking down on you i had tried just about every diet out there and then i went to my dr and he suggested lap band and 12 months later here i am i have lost 12kgs in 3 weeks and loving it and although it takes a bit to get used to its well worth it!!
if you have any ? feel free to ask me :)
