How to keep track of expenses

Entries

I've been 2 weeks ago

keeping track of expenses in October. Though it looked like a cheap month, I’ve spent about 80% of my income which I think is a lot.
Spending was as follows (in % of total amount spent) :

House (mortgage) + garage (rent) 40%
Energy and telecom 10%
Food 18%
Psy 9%
Classes (singing, Alexander tech) 6%
Others 17%

Lessons learned: food takes much more than expected. Energy is expensive.
As I’m definitely living within my means, I don’t feel the need to put more effort in further tracking my expenses for now:)

I started expense tracking with the Xpenser website (http://xpenser.com). It’s free and offers lots of features, my favourite being expense tracking via email: at the moment I spent money on something I can send off a short note to my personal Xpenser email address, and that’s it.

Another try 13 months ago

I will give this goal another try. I think it is really important to know where I spend my money and particularly where I am wasting my money on things I could get cheaper or don’t really need. Now that I am dealing with a new currency it get’s even more important. It is so easy to loose the overview of what I get (in one currency) and what I spend (in another), plus all the transfers in between.

New month.. 21 months ago

..and starting over. I really got off track due to all the travelling. So March will be a new try.

After a good start 21 months ago

I’ve been slacking. The trip to Tokyo really messed it up and I am not getting back in. I will definitely start doing it tomorrow.

I've been doing this... 22 months ago

... for 4 days now and it has been easier than I thought. Today in fact there is too much money in my wallet.. hm. I don’t mind, that my money multiplies by itself, but I honestly can’t figure out, what I did wrong in calculating my expenses.

I’ve started doing this now and hope I will keep it up at least for a month. I have an excel spreadsheet a friend of mine developed, but in fact it takes a couple of minutes to fill it in each night. I know I should be able to spare these minutes, but I am not so sure I actually will. We’ll see…
