Proud papa.  — 1 month ago

My son’s baseball team played the first game in their district playdowns this afternoon against the best team in the city at our level of play. Altogether, Adam’s team didn’t play its best, made too many errors and lost the game, but my son was our starting pitcher and pitched very well and he only gave up a few hits in a little over 4 innings, to a very strong team. At one point during the 1st and 2nd innings, Adam struck out 4 of their batters in a row!

Pay for the next person in line.  — 1 month ago

I enjoyed doing this a few days ago at work. I was at my usual morning spot to buy my coffee (usually Kona) and muffin and behind me in line was a co-worker. I don’t work directly with her, but she works on the same floor as I do. She said hi to me and joked that I could pick up the cost of her breakfast sandwich while I was paying for mine. So I was pleased to see the look on her face when I indeed paid for her breakfast! haha….she wasn’t expecting this in the least.

This is a fun activity and helps others!

Beautiful "Summer" day!  — 4 months ago

A Poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, "The Charge Of the Light Brigade"  — 4 months ago

My Grade 7 English teacher was very much into poetry and this was one of many poems that she helped me discover. I memorized and recited Lord Tennyson’s classic poem for Miss Williams. One person in my class memorized over 1,100 lines of poetry that year. I was successful in memorizing just a fraction of that amount, lol. This was one poem that I might never forget. The six hundred riders followed their orders and did not question that the order was ill-conceived, to use their light calvary to try to charge through a heavy cannon defence:

Half a league half a league,
    Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred:
    ‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.

    ‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’
    Was there a man dismay’d ?
    Not tho’ the soldier knew
    Some one had blunder’d:
    Theirs not to make reply,
    Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.

    Cannon to right of them,
    Cannon to left of them,
    Cannon in front of them
    Volley’d & thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
    Boldly they rode and well,
    Into the jaws of Death,
    Into the mouth of Hell
    Rode the six hundred.

    Flash’d all their sabres bare,
Flash’d as they turn’d in air
    Sabring the gunners there,
    Charging an army while
    All the world wonder’d:
    Plunged in the battery-smoke
    Right thro’ the line they broke;
    Cossack & Russian
    Reel’d from the sabre-stroke,
    Shatter’d & sunder’d.
Then they rode back, but not
    Not the six hundred.

    Cannon to right of them,
    Cannon to left of them,
    Cannon behind them
    Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
    While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro’ the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
    Left of six hundred.

    When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
    All the world wonder’d.
    Honour the charge they made!
    Honour the Light Brigade,
    Noble six hundred!

This is not something I like to think about. Our household got off fairly well and only lost power here and there a few hours at a time. You might enjoy this reading:
