become interesting

After reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, I realized how much I needed to show interest in others. I’ve been making a conscious effort over the past few years to ask lots of questions and prod people to talk about what they like. However, I have discovered a fatal flaw in this idea. If I’m not interesting enough to other people, they will rarely reciprocate this interest. I spent lots of time learning their names, while they quickly forget mine and ignore me in the hallways. I may talk to them briefly, but I rarely develop any meaningful relationships with them. I realize that I need to engage myself in activities and thoughts that attract people to me.

that’s sort of a difficult goal… or tricky rather.
i want to be interesting in a way that revolves less around me and more on what is outside of me. i think i have had interesting experiences and an interesting history, but that does not make someone interesting.
i can tell a good story and even occasionally resurrect a pathetic party with some witty banter. but, what i would really like is to be so interesting that I could have a vastly interesting conversation with someone for let’s say…an hour?
the interesting part would be for it to never be about me, something that happened to me or someone that i know. additionally, heated and opinionated exchanges are great, but they are a little sketchy in this department. to meet my criteria, they can not be centered around converting someone to an opinion nor extolling upon the virtues of my own opinion.

so what the fuck am i gonna talk about?????

maybe once i figure that out i’ll be at the heart of interesting.
