slowly making progress.... 12 months ago

but could do better, particularly in my primary field of expertise, historical collections. And so far, my progress has been erratic and done in spurts, and also, quite shamefully, encouraged by others. I need to take a much stronger hand in this.

This summer I started a research project on Mrs. Frank Leslie but haven’t progressed very far. I feel a strange kinship to this woman, plus, there hasn’t been much written on her since the 50s. If this were a dissertation topic, it would be prime (sigh).

I saw this from someone else today: I’m not quite sure what “my field” is, exactly. But when I find it, I will be an expert! :)”

I had to laugh because I was thinking exactly the same thing! :)

What I really want... 22 months ago

I just want to find a position at a company where I love what I’m doing everyday. That I feel like I’m making a difference and that I respect what they stand for. If that means, working for myself one day or just doing some pro bono design work for animal shelters in my spare time, that is what really matters to me. Being an expert, I don’t think is really measurable in my profession. Who’s to judge, and if I ever consider myself an expert someone should come along a knock me in the side of my over-inflated head.

This appears to have happened. The way to do it is to concentrate on the “becoming an expert” part, then the “becoming known” part follows on. I should probably have guessed that to start with, eh?

My field is small but getting larger 2 years ago

Rather than try to describe what it is, or what I am about, I will say that it helped that I was a pioneer. I brought new ways of doing very old stuff to the table. I went where the energy was. Where people were interested, and valued what I did, I put my energy. Where people were ready to undermine me, I would get bogged down.

There were some people who championed me, and thought I was “the best there was, anywhere” at what I do. I worked enough under those people to earn a stellar reputation.

What it got me was a degree of freedom in an unfree world.

I am well on my way 2 years ago

I was interviewed on my Master’s Paper and have been recruited for consulting positions. I still have a long way to go until I will consider myself an established expert.

My goal is to work for the CDC as an epidemiologist. It would be great to become an expert and become well known. Everytime I get stressed with school work or tired of all the work, I remind myself of what I want…. give me a few years on this though

It’s the coolest thing when just about everyone knows you’re an expert in your profession. It makes you become highly sought after!
